About this listen

An intergalactic starship the runs on molten uranium? Roger that. A boisterous crew? Affirmative. A theremin? A Jacob's ladder? Flubber??? What else will young space engineer Cal find on this 27-month deep-space adventure?

Songs of the Etonic by D.K. Spencer is a thrilling, contemporary rendering of a nostalgic voyage, humorously depicting the early 1950s and '60s optimism of interstellar space exploration.

Fresh out of the Academy, Cal must learn to fit in on an antiquated, intergalactic space freighter with a much older, multiracial crew. With the rocket's destination and mission kept secret, Cal works closely with his crewmates to keep operations safe and running smoothly.

When sabotage is discovered that could end in a catastrophic explosion, the chief engineer risks his life to save the spaceship, and Cal jumps in to help. Can they stop a core meltdown to save the ship and crew?

How will Cal perform under pressure, being the "new kid" on this "old bucket of andirons"?

And what are the Songs of the Etonic?

Retro Sci-Fi

Fresh out of the academy, Cal’s hopes of serving on an up-to-date rocket are dashed when he is assigned to an older than dirt intergalactic space freighter. Not only is the freighter ancient but the crew is unique and breaks into song at the drop of a hat. Not only is Cal figuring out how to deal with all this but there’s sabotage and the core is set for a meltdown!

D.K. Spencer, the author captures the enthusiasm and earlier hopes of interstellar space travel. The characters are rich and vividly described. The dialog is realistic keeping the flow of the story smooth. The songs sung by the crew are intricately woven into the story and reflect the action of the scene.

The narrator, Willie T. Robinson gives a clever performance. Narrated much as one would hear in a vintage space program/film, Robinson’s tone and unique voice for each character are reflective of that time. His performance was flawless.
This is a theatrical performance complete with music, sound effects, and songs. While I am not a fan of such audiobooks, I realize there is a time and a place for them. This is one of those times where the theatrical performance was appropriate.

There were some issues with the sound quality of this production. The sound effects, music, and songs at times were rough and seemed to have an echo quality.
