About this listen

There's guerrilla warfare in the main asteroid belt. The Red Houzi pirates have launched a deadly campaign, sacking defenseless mining colonies and then vanishing into the deep dark of space. No one can predict where or when they will show up next, not even the great Mars Protectorate Navy.

Liam Hoffen and Nick James have returned from their last encounter grateful to be alive, but wondering what they'll do next. Sterra's Gift is nothing more than a broken heap, strapped to a pile of ore. Replacing their beloved ship is hopeless - or so they think until a crazy old man introduces them to an old British warship named Hotspur.

News of Red Houzi attacks near Colony 40 spurs Liam and his crew into action and they set off on a desperate race to save their families. But, what can one ship possibly do against an entire fleet? They'll put everything on the line, but the question is - will it be enough?

A fun read.

Builds the characters personalities, and opens the scope of the threats in a extra solar world.

Enjoyed it.

Roger that

Good old-fashioned space opera with all the right payoffs.

Two complaints, though: 1) the author needs to learn what the word "roger" means in the piloting arena. It doesn't mean what he thinks it means. and 2) HUD. It's not aitch-you-dee, it's hud, rhyming with "mud".

Story good, audible bad

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Nope; the audible program stuttered, locked, crashed and skipped chapters; the book was better than audible's capability to have a decently working program. Better, easier to use kindle for pc with audio plug in with narrator and speakonia added on, bit robotic voice but at least it actually usually works.

What did you like best about this story?

It was space opera, duh.

How could the performance have been better?

It could have not stuttered, locked, crashed, skipped, but that's all on audible not the story.

Do you think Smuggler's Dilemma needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Why would it matter if I did or didn't.

Any additional comments?

Audible has totally useless questions as well as rating...what is overall, versus performance {audibles or the story's? The book was better, the computerized audio was at least okay, audible program was total crap.

Really well done

This was actually my very first audible book. I have to admit that it would never replace reading for me. Having said that, I thought this particular book was very well done. The narrator's voice was crisp and clear. It was easy to tell when he switched between characters and he did a great job of conveying the sense of excitement in the action scenes. If I ever have a need for a voice reading of a book I will certainly hope he is the narrator.

Now, as to the actual book. Bottom line: if you like Weber and Heinlein (the highest of praise in my book) then you'll enjoy Rookie Privateer.

This was a truly well wonderful book with strong characters and an excellent action-filled plot line in an extremely well constructed universe. The only negative is that it took about 1/5th of the way in before the main plot got going. That first fifth was relevant and necessary backstory about life where the main characters grew up, but with the word "privateer" in the title I just knew they'd be going elsewhere and was over eager for that to happen. I suspect that if I hadn't known that then the backstory (well written in itself) would've been more fun. I know that I will be re-reading (if that's the correct audible term) this book again (which in itself shows how much I enjoyed it) and I'm sure I will savor those opening chapters more when I do

A young man's dreams come true.. sort of.

Big Peet's comments about all the women around Liam made me laugh because it was true.. would have liked to see a male character with the same bravery as the female associates. Just the two guys is getting old.. but I still like the series and the narrator, and hope the last three larger books are added to audiobooks soon.

The Best Ride, satisfying.

Another great book, the reason I can't wait for the next story! On a par with the first three.

Great Audio version of Smuggler's Dilemma

Loved the Audible version of Smuggler's Dilemma. I have read the Kindle edition of all the Privateer Tales books and now I am enjoying revisiting these stories thru Audible. I had forgotten how much happened in this book! Jamie McFarlane packs a lot of action into this story. Particularly loved the descriptions of the mechanized suits. I think Liam did alot of growing up in this book. I find myself much more sympathetic to Tabby this time around too. Mikael Naramore is a really good narrator. I can easily recognize each characters voice. Can't wait for the next audible installment in this series!
