About this listen

When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up in bed with the handsome and hard-partying Jay Burgess, a rising star detective in the Charleston PD, she remembers nothing of how she got there...or of how Jay wound up dead.

Five years earlier, Jay was a hero of a disastrous fire at Charleston's police headquarters, which would have been even deadlier if not for the bravery of Jay and three other city officials who led others to safety.

Firefighter Raley Gannon, Jay's lifelong friend, had been assigned to investigate the fire, but the investigation ended in a scandal that shattered Raley's world, and forced him to surrender the woman he loved and the work to which he'd dedicated his life. For five years his resentment has festered, but he was helpless to set things right. That changes when he learns of Jay's shocking death.

As suspicion against Britt Shelley mounts, Raley realizes that the newswoman might be his only chance to get personal vindication - and justice for the seven victims of the police station fire. But there are powerful men who don't want to address unanswered questions about the fire, and will go to any lengths to protect their reputations.

As Raley and Britt discover more about what happened that fateful day, they realize that they're not only chasing after the truth but running for their lives.

Smoke Screen is Sandra Brown's most intense novel yet.

Great story, well told

Narration was excellent. Brought the characters to life and gave them personalities and soul.

Raw and exciting

I love her books. I always think I may know the villain but then I get surprised. The romance is very suggestive but it is real. It goes well with her story. This was one of those books. I loved it.

Fasten your seatbelt!

Mystery/detective thrillers are my "go-to" genre. What makes Smoke Screen a good read is the seamless interweaving of plot with rich and fully realized characters. This was my first Sandra Brown listen (a suggestion from a friend) but she is now on my favorite author list. I'm already on my second Brown title and will continue till I have read or listened to every title on the Brown list.

Good book

Couldn't wait to get back in the car to hear more. Good book with good twists and, of course, a great ending.

Great story, but redundant

I do love Sandra Brown's books and have listened to quite a few. However, they're starting to sound more like an equation. They're so similar that I'm beginning to lose interest. If this had been my first, I would have loved it as much as the others.

Not her best work.

Sandra Brown spends too much time having her two heroes run from the same people over and over and over again. The plot is too simple to keep your interest for this many pages. She needed to wrap up the ending of her book a little faster. It dragged on...and that was WITH me organizing my garage while listening.

Great

In Sandra Brown fashion, this is tops! My favorite of her narrators, Victor Slezak is the best for her books! I’m getting better at guessing the twists but I don’t get them all... better I don’t ... I love the reveal!

Victor Brings Amazing Life to the Characters

Where does Smoke Screen rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I just love Victor's voice. But the plot of the story was a bit lame. I knew where it was headed before it got there, which can be an upset when you are reading this book to your self. I always find I skip ahead when I know what to expect, easier to hold out when it's being read to you, via audiotext. But overall, I enjoyed the story, but could have used less over the top drama. But as with other Sandra Brown stories, there is always a steamy love scene, and you will not be disappointed with this one. I wouldn't have picked this as my first exposure to Sandra Brown novels, but it wasn't the worst one either.

What did you like best about this story?

Sorry, I like the love scenes, not sure all of you are into that, but I honestly enjoy Sandra's style, the love scenes are gross, or disrespectful, they have a flair that makes me feel like I'm a part of the affair:D

What about Victor Slezak’s performance did you like?

OMG! I love this man, he brings life to the characters, even when he reads the female parts I hear the female, I picture the characters! I hear myself talking like the characters just from hearing Victor read it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending, I was sad that it was over, but so glad that it ended that way, it was expected and what should have happened.
