About this listen

A mystery set in the Florida Keys, Sleeping Dogs Lie is the first installment of the story of lottery-winner turned private detective, Dan Coast.

Dan, a wise-cracking excessive drinker, is haunted by the memory of his dead wife. Shortly after the two won the lottery and purchased a small beach bungalow in the Florida Keys, her life was taken in a car accident. Soon after his wife's death, Dan relocated to the Keys with his wife's dog, whom he blames for her death.

In Sleeping Dogs Lie, Dan Coast, an unlicensed private detective of sorts, is hired to find the missing boyfriend of a woman who herself soon ends up missing. When someone from the woman's past unexpectedly shows up at Dan's home with a story of faked deaths and missing life insurance money, Dan, along with his sidekick Red, set out to find the money, and the woman.

A fun summer summer read with a great narration

This is a humorous audio book with some great one liners. The narrator, Alex Robertson has a fantastic voice that makes this book even better. I'm looking forward to hearing more of these stories.

Solid potboiler

If hard drinking, salty semi private eyes in a tropical setting are your thing, you'll enjoy Sleeping Dogs Lie. Clearly the author has a feel for Key West and likes to eat and drink since he spent far more time describing locations and food and alcoholic beverages than working out a compelling (or believable) detective yarn. (Seems likely that forensics agents would question and work out the details of the climax and likely bring the unlicensed gun toting main character up on charges) But there are some amiable flourishes, chiefly a dopey, unresponsive dog named Buddy. And the Florida Keys setting is a unique touch, like I said. Above all, the cast of characters is memorable and are expertly brought to life by the narrator Alex Robertson, who seems born to read audio books.

A great start to a great series

After reading that nasty review, I just had to chime in. i'm a writer myself... so can you blame me?

I happened onto this series because Rodney and his main character Dan Coast were mentioned in another. Being an avid sailor and Key West fan, I just had to try this out and I'm glad i did!

This is a book and a series that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's meant to be a fun romp with a light hearted atmosphere. yet Rodney still manages to slip in some intricacy and depth. Dan is a troubled character with a gruff exterior yet you can tell, especially as you go through the 11 books I've read so far, that he cares and that there's truly something admirable about him.

As for laughs, you'll not be dissapointed! Alex Robertson does a great job, too.

I thought it would never end

Has been a long time since I have read or listened to a book this bad. I almost dumped it after 1st 25%, but didn't. Wish I had.
Juvenile, poorly written and poorly narrated.
Never again for author Rodney Riesal or narrator Alex Robertson
