About this listen

Inspired by real-life experiences, She’s on Air tells the story of two best friends just out of grad school trying to make it in television news.

Emma Lowe and Isabella Speranza are both ambitious, talented, and more than a little bit anxious about working in TV, but they go about their career paths in totally different ways. Emma, the scrappy blonde who wants to be on air, follows her journalism professor’s advice and leaves New York for a job at a small-town station in Mississippi. Isabella, the privileged dark-haired daughter of a telenovela actress, opts to work her way up the ladder behind the scenes at National News Network in Manhattan. As the two rise up the ranks, they clash professionally and romantically and run up against some #MeToo obstacles on their way to (possible) TV superstardom.

About the Creator

Born in the Bronx to first-generation Irish parents, Darby Dunn grew up in a small town in New Jersey watching the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. (You know who he is, right?) Darby studied history and Italian at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a graduate degree in journalism from Northwestern. She worked as a reporter in various small cities before landing back in New York, where she worked for WNBC, CNBC and CNN. She is currently running a media training practice and raising her two children, who definitely don’t know Walter Cronkite, but can Google him. And that’s the way it is.

About the Creator

Born in France, Charlotte Sector later moved to the United States where watching TV was encouraged to improve her English. She worked at the International Herald Tribune as a member of the support staff, which proved to be a great learning experience. Charlotte graduated from Columbia Journalism School in 2000 and worked in New York city for CNN where she won Emmy recognition for September 11 coverage (and met her co-author.) She then did a stint with ABC News before returning to Paris in 2006 to help launch France 24, an international news television network. She served as an Executive Producer there for nine years and currently works and lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

About the Performer

Andrea Villaverde is a bilingual on-camera actress, voice talent and singer in both English and Spanish. Throughout her successful career Andrea has dubbed a wealth of high-profile projects such as Dr. Who and voices characters in prominent anime releases, telenovelas, cartoons, and movie productions for BBC, NBC/Telemundo, Nickelodeon, and other leading entertainment organizations. Andrea also performs voice overs for top brands including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, and was one of the main protagonists in the ADDY Award-winning Toyota RAV4 commercial for her role as La Llorona. Andrea is thrilled to be collaborating with Audible Originals and looks forward to voicing many more printed works.

Great story well told.

Dunn (no relation) and Sector Tell a story that dives deep into the world of today’s news. From the small markets in rural towns Where is the news is truly local and therefore more personal to the biggest markets of all where jockeying for position and power is like blood sport, She’s On Air shows it all. Through the eyes of our two heroes, the thrill of the scoop and the decisions as to what is news and what is not are laid bare in the course of a gripping story of these two young women as they follow their destinies on and off the air. It is a story in turn thought provoking, funny and most of all suspenseful. Highly recommend.

Such fun to get a glimpse inside a newsroom and the people who work there. So many intriguing details about the main characters along with the captivating plot made me want to find out more with every chapter. Loved the ending too!
