About this listen

This first book in a feminist space opera duology follows seven resistance fighters who will free the galaxy from the ruthless Tholosian Empire - or die trying.

When Eris faked her death, she thought she had left her old life as the heir to the galaxy's most ruthless empire behind. But her recruitment by the Novantaen Resistance, an organization opposed to the empire's voracious expansion, throws her right back into the fray.

Eris has been assigned a new mission: to infiltrate a spaceship ferrying deadly cargo and return the intelligence gathered to the Resistance. But her partner for the mission, mechanic and hotshot pilot Cloelia, bears an old grudge against Eris, making an already difficult infiltration even more complicated.

When they find the ship, they discover more than they bargained for: three fugitives with firsthand knowledge of the corrupt empire's inner workings.

Together, these women possess the knowledge and capabilities to bring the empire to its knees. But the clock is ticking: The new heir to the empire plans to disrupt a peace summit with the only remaining alien empire, ensuring the empire’s continued expansion. If they can find a way to stop him, they will save the galaxy. If they can't, millions may die.

I approached this as I do any book. Don’t care if the characters are primarily male or female. As a result, I was able to really enjoy the book and I definitely look forward to where the next one will take me!!!

I liked it!!!

It’s a similar feel to Becky Chamber’s Wayfarer Series. Excited for the upcoming release of the sequel!

Great Space Adventure

This isn’t a lesbian romance with some sci-fi. It’s a sci-fi with awesome female characters, some of which are queer. I thought it was was a great story. The narrator brought it to life perfectly. I can’t wait to start the second book.

Great sci-fi

loved the story was engaged and interested the whole way through. The characters had life to them, each with their own flaws and strengths. The plot kept me engage and needing to know what happened next.

Great story

This book is pretty good for the first chapter or two, really drags in the middle, and then picks up a lot in the last third to a can’t-stop-listening intensity.

Too many characters, and they’re almost all somewhat cliche, but they’re executed well. Has a les-fic problem of laying the groundwork of what could be a fun/tense enemies-to-lovers romance but instead going for the sweet, boring, totally suspense and conflict free until the angsty-near-breakup well into the longterm relationship storyline instead. The characters are trope-y but it’s clear the authors weren’t interested in writing romance in the genre sense. (This doesn’t save us from some cloyingly sugary sex scenes, though they’re fade to black.)

Voice-acting was absolutely stellar. Amazing range and unique character given to each speaker.

Spark comes through even with uneven pacing

I read Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May on ebook back when it was initially released and wanted to get ready for the sequel (Seven Mercies) so I just finished listening to the audio. Christina Traister does a great job with the narration and I really enjoyed it as much the second time around.

The book’s tagline is "feminist space opera" -- it tells the story of a group of female resistance fighters vs a patriarchal empire and it has underlying themes of consent and prejudice. It gets dark at times, but it’s also fun.

There is very detailed political world building, explorations of secret pasts, found family, and a sapphic romance.

It’s the first book in a duology - they wrap up one important thread of the story, but they also leave a few things open in order to establish the path for the next book. Now, I have the sequel Seven Mercies downloaded and am eager to move on to the next part of the story.

Badass Women in Space!
