What a Ride!

This novel captivated me from the very first few pages when the family went on a road trip and discovered their teenager was accidentally left behind at a truck stop! One thing right after another happened and I could not stop listening. Where was Riley and did the family know more than they were letting on? Narration was great.
I definitely did not anticipate the outcome! Highly recommend!

Interesting story

I think the book was well written and interesting. For me, it was the narrator who was unappealing. She was horrible at the male voice reading and many times the book sounded like a hallmark movie.

More predictable and lack luster narration

After listening to the whole Reed-Sydowski series, written years ago by Mofina, I was excited to buy credits and listen to one more, especially since it was placed in San Diego, where I live. I appreciate Mofina’s inclusion of local neighborhoods, streets and landmarks on his But this book….I finished it but having serious issues with the plot being somewhat predictable and yet giving us that delightful run around (I do like red herrings, believe me, but not when I already know who the culprit is.)
And the narration was inconsistent (especially when the dialogues a involved many voices,) and just didn’t do it for me. The mothers voice was particularly annoying (the intonation, the dramatics.)

I’ll try other RM books, hoping that they lean more towards the Reed-Syd series.

Intriguing characters

Liked the multiple people who could have kidnapped the teen age girl. Many twists and turns and a surprise ending. Well written and hard to put down.

Takes a while to get going; narrator sucks!

If you can make it thru the first 24 chapters (90+ total) you'll enjoy this one. The story doesn't seem to go anywhere until chapter 25; even though I'd figured out the plot line in about chapter 2!

Additionally, the narrator's mind-numbing, plodding, monotone interpretation of the lead male detective (and other male characters) left me contemplating smashing my head against the wall! It wasn't until I increased the playback speed to 130% that I could stand to continue listening.

Gotta say that I was suspicious, but never really saw the ending coming. Nice twist.

Twists, Turns and Red Herrings...

This is another very good standalone book by Rick Mofina. Mofina’s background as a crime reporter certainly gives his stories a feeling of authenticity. For the most part this book is believable with a few exceptions where the police investigation is concerned. However because it sounds unbelievable to me, it probably is a true event!

I would like to express my condolences to Wayne (Matthews, NC). I’ve been checking his page regularly for the past five months with no change in the # of books rated I feared my favorite book reviewer had come down with COVID. I am relieved to find out that he is well but very sorry for his tragedy. Please know that although I don’t know you except through your reviews, you are highly respected and believe it or not a bright spot in my life every time I read one of your reviews.
Be well.
