About this listen

SOLO: Northwest is Book I in the SOLO series, chronicling one man's through-hike of the apocalypse.

Off-the-grid and unaware. A descent into a surreal world. A non-stop fight to survive…

Under investigation for a police shooting, Officer Val Slaine seeks seclusion and anonymity through-hiking California's Pacific Crest Trail. While off-the-grid, Val hikes into a sleepy Northern California town and discovers a viral outbreak has quickly taken over the world. Infected human killers now mercilessly hunt down the uninfected, and civilization has already descended into chaos. Val's journey to the Northern California coastline is turned into a violent battleground, where his resolve to make his way home is put to the test.

The story isn't too bad

I'm not a big fan of virtual voice, simply because I'd rather support a true narrator. It's not that bad, but it lacks the inflections and emotions that you get with a real narrator. The story itself is pretty good. It's not big on zombie action, but there is some. It's a bit desolate and lonely at times. I did stay interested in what the character was doing and what was happening with him. There are a lot of books that I start and just can't finish because the story didn't keep me in it. This is not one of those books. This book is good enough that I will have to check out the author to see what else he's got.

Good Story line

I have previously read the first two books by this author and have been waiting for the next installment. I was excited to see an Audible version. I have mixed feelings about AI narration. On the one hand, it provides narration for some of my favorites when they might not have made it to Audible otherwise. But I prefer actual narrators, they convey emotions with more inflection. This however, was one of the better AI Audibles. Definitely worth a listen. I'll be watching for the next one.

Not bad

I wish the protagonist 's thinking was much less we did not need to know every single thought and movement. Otherwise I liked it. Looking forward to the next one.

Good Story

This was a good story, I liked the Pacific Crest Trail details and airplane idea in a post apocalyptic setting.
The virtual voice detracts from the story bcz there isn’t much inflection.
The ending wasn’t and ending, but rather, a total cliff hanger and book 2 isn’t on audio. Had I known that before starting this book, I would’ve bypassed it.

virtual voice

I really enjoyed the story but the virtual voice is better than it was in the beginning but it's still you have mispronounced words and you don't get the reaction that you do from a human voice . it makes the stories hard to listen to.

If almost expired milk were a book/ audio performance.

It's not the worst? but it's also not good. I mean it obviously is what it is with A.I., weird inflections, no warmth to conversations between characters. Add to it the fact that the story itsself is only so so it just makes it all the more bland. The story starts out interesting but it's overall just boring, the writer gets too into detail about guns and ammo specifics and it just isn't terribly interesting. Also it ends on a cliffhanger so I'm guessing it's a series?
