Death doesn't always kill you....
But second chances don't come free.
Death is inevitable...unless the Second Chance (SC) program recruits your particular super power. One last chance at life, in exchange for unquestioning completion of tasks set by the system that brought you back.
At first, Dare's assignments seem trivial, inconsequential even. But as the missions progress, they produce more questions and no answers. Unexpected assailants, inexplicable tasks, and too many people Dare knows already in the system. Dare's never believed in coincidences.
SC's motives are unclear. Questions aren't tolerated. Punishment is meted out arbitrarily. And SC can terminate the contract, and all participants' lives with it, at any point in time.
Dare's only chance is to figure out how to fight back without being deleted in the process.
Rise is a Gamelit dark contemporary science fiction story set in the near future and is the first book in the Last Chance series. It touches on death, the afterlife, torture, and the lengths people can be pushed, too.

Great story!

What if dying isn't always permanent... at least not when Second-Chance deems that your talents are crucial to the game they've created in order to save the human race! Second-Chance gives you no say in the decision, and they have you over a barrel. You have to play by their rules or you will be painfully punished, or depending on the severity of your indiscretion... perma-die!!!
Dare is the newest player in the game. She's not happy with Second-Chance's stifling edicts, or the lack of information they provide to the players.
I couldn't quite warm up to Dare's character... something I was aware could happen because I've tried reading KT Hanna in the past! But in this case, I was able to let the plot and the action drive me to the stories conclusion!
Of course Andrea Parsneau's great narration certainly helped me get there!😊👍
... And yes, I absodamnlutely need to know what's going to happen in the next book!
I learned about something very real, very cool, and somewhat disturbing while reading this book, and that is the Lichtenberg figure, or scaring. It's real. Go ahead and look it up! 😳
Let the action take you away!

I own all of K.T. Hanna’s other Somnia Online series narrated by Andrea. I really love that series, and so I’ve gotten used to the way the author portray’s females as emotionally unstable (Murmur, her girlfriend, her mother, etc.), completely introspective, blanking out constantly when being talked to by others, worrying non-stop, angry, sad, angry again, sad again, emotionally distant, etc. etc. K.T. Hanna seems to only make female characters with these characteristics. The difference here is there are other characters in Somnia Online to be able to get past all the self pity and self doubt, but not with this book. Too many hours were spent reminding us the character is an emotional grab bag, she absolutely CAN’T tell anybody about her predicament, and then the constant “I don’t know how to do that! Despite never bothering to spend time figuring it out. C’mon K.T…..you’re better than that. You’re previous works prove it. There’s so many more things I could say to keep picking this apart, but I’m not trying to be dick. I like K.T.’s works and know she’s capable of much better than this book. Could’ve, should’ve been amazing. Instead, it was consistently frustrating, depressing, and cringe worthy way too often.
Way too much introspection….
