AMAZING

The story is an incredible story of anger and hate. The way the author shows the differences in these emotions is astounding. The audiobook reader does an incredible job with the different voices and songs. Truly a beautiful book all around.

Excellent Universe and Narrator

I love the universe that this builds, weaving all kinds of real historical and cultural touchstones into a rich mythology. I wish the other aspects of the book got as much attention—the characters are mostly archetypes and the plot never gives them room to do anything but the climactic move of what would otherwise be a chapter or series of chapters full of subtle discovery. This rushed quality robs most moments of their power, which are treated like big payoffs but have never been given enough time to build beforehand. However, I’d love to read more from this universe and from Clark in general. Narrator Waites does an excellent job. [AUDIBLE]

Amazing.

This is, hands down, the best book I've read this year. There are some interesting parallels between this book and Matt Ruff's LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, which I liked but didn't love. Ultimately, I felt like this book accomplished something similar that Ruff had set out to do in his novel, but P. Djèlí Clark did it better than Ruff. It's possible that the difference is in the authors' lived experiences and racial identities...

The narration for this audiobook is excellent. I'm looking forward to reading more works by Clark and listening to more books read by Chance Waites.

The immersion really get you

I felt like I was thrown back to being a kid immersed in a fantasy world. The emotions definitely came through and when it hits I know this work is really good.

Interesting "movie-like" story with an extra-ordinary narrating performance

Had stumbled upon this book through one of those "Best horror..." lists on another site.
So i started listening without knowing the author or the plot and no expectations at all.
It was hard for me for the first few minutes, since Im not an english-speaker and this book narration is all about south-accents and vibes, but after these few minutes I was sucked in because of this outstanding narrator. Its a theater-show of one person. Book is coming to life, narrator handles it perfectly - voices, songs, general tense descriptions, all.

Book itself is great, while I cant get frightened by a book, this is a real tense and grotesque story. Flow of events is clear and it streams with the right pace of action and revelations.

Again, a one hell of a ride thanks to an awsome narrating performance.

Great book, easy read with the audio. I’d recommend as a reading selection during Hoodoo month.

Wow

I purchased Ring Shout, anticipating a vivid world, populated by fascinating characters, because it's P. Djeli Clark after all. He has this ability to create characters I can both identify with and relate to, no matter how different their world is from mine or they are from myself. I guess that's the mark of a brilliant story teller. I'm always on the look out for anything he publishes and haven't been disappointed yet.

Ring Shout is set post WWI. The feel of the time is beautifully recreated, the social structure, the gravitas of the situation and Clark adds in Lovecraftian supernatural elements that heighten the threat of what's at risk of being enacted - the KKK coming to power in the United States. (I researched Birth of a Nation, chilled by the movie's message and influence on society at the time.) The book also has a bit of a feel like a documentary, with interviews at the start of the chapters from people who participated in a ring shout, that adds validity to the events that unfold in that section. As the story grows there's also a deep attachment to the characters, warts and all.

Great story and Channie Waites' narration is _fantastic_. I especially liked how she perfectly captured the lyrical beauty of a song's description and then illustrated it by staying in character and singing their lines. Wow. Well worth the credit.
