About this listen

Corey J. White's debut novel Repo Virtual blurs the lines between the real and virtual in an action-packed cyberpunk heist story.

The city of Neo Songdo is a Russian doll of realities - augmented and virtual spaces anchored in the weight of the real. The smart city is designed to be read by machine vision while people see only the augmented facade of the corporate ideal. At night the stars are obscured by an intergalactic virtual war being waged by millions of players, while on the streets below people are forced to beg, steal, and hustle to survive.

Enter Julius Dax, online repoman and real-life thief. He's been hired for a special job: stealing an unknown object from a reclusive tech billionaire. But when he finds out he's stolen the first sentient AI, his payday gets a lot more complicated.

Critic reviews

"Cyberpunk's critical update, for these mixed-reality days of dark money, livestreaming cults, machine gaze and life lived on the razorwire edge." (Warren Ellis)

"Repo Virtual constructs a stunningly vivid cyberpunk world that blurs the line between illusion and reality, dripping with the neon panache of a technological juggernaut in an action packed heist that'll steal your heart with ideas that are as revealing as they are powerful." (Peter Tieryas)

Awesome, book

I’d recommend this to anyone I’d like to Syfy. Great characters and just overall great story.

Cyberpunk online gaming

Corey J White’s Repo Virtual is a nonstop cyberpunk adventure. The main character specializes in repossession in the real world as well as online. He is commissioned to steal some software purported to be a virus from a richest man on the planet by an activist group. After he succeeds, he is reluctant to easily part with the booty. What ensues is a scramble from both sides to recover the software which is more than a virus and represents an advanced AI which he activates and assists him in staying alive.

White offers an extrapolation of today’s current digital technology as well as online gaming capability. At the same time, the occupation of ‘repo’ doesn’t go out of style. There’s a good mixture of both actual action as well as digital hackery that makes for a nonstop ride to the very end.

The narration is quite good with excellent character distinction. Pacing is smooth and brisk.

a little predictable

narrator was great, good voicing for different. Nothing wrong with inclusion but the percentage of gay/tg characters made it a bit of a bump in my ability to suspend disbelief. some of the dialog is superfluous, tends to go on and on in places.
