A very helpful guidebook for those who find themselves or loved ones navigating the trail of Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

Author Craig Williamson is a survivor of the long ordeal he experienced as the father of a brilliant and talented son trapped for years in the cycle of SUD. In and out of treatment and rehab; the highs and lows of getting life back together repeatedly only to fall back into substance use again and again.

Williamson's observations are concise and helpful to anyone who finds themselves or a loved one dealing with SUD.

This book is a fast read, a crash-course, no words waisted as the author recounts the battle with addiction, dealing with the mental health system, ambulances, hospitals, insurance and other logistical issues. Things family members can do to be helpful. Plus, the tough love, the denial, the unintended enabling, and how the family both contributes to and copes with the damages, and in Williamson's son's case, his eventual death in his late 20s from a deadly combination of substances, improperly prescribed psych drugs, diabetes and other underlying health issues.

Williamson also shines his light on helpful intervention options, treatment centers, clean-housing pros and cons, the very hopeful AA 12-Step program, Al-Anon, and other support groups along with a genuine submission to a higher power that is so needed for spiritual solice during this exhausting journey.
