About this listen

There’s a crush, and then, there are the type of feelings that Croft Cruisie evokes from a person.

He’s everything that any straight woman would want: tall, handsome, charismatic, muscular, and sweet.

At least, Carmichael thought he was sweet, until he brings another woman to the gym she owns with her brother, on the night that’s to be their first date, and lets her know in a quick and painful, nonverbal way that her feelings are not reciprocated.

Fast forward six months, and she’s still trying to move on from the rejection.

It doesn’t help that the jerk moves in next door to her and that she has to see him workout shirtless every single day.

How can a woman get over a silly crush when that silly crush won’t so much as give her room to breathe?

Croft doesn’t know what happened.

One day he was supposed to go on a date with the girl that wouldn’t leave his thoughts for even a second, and the next she’s avoiding him like the plague.

No matter how hard he tries - and admittedly, it isn’t all that hard due to the biggest case of his career taking over his life - he can’t get her to tell him what he did wrong. She refuses to give him a second chance.

At least, not until he’s nearly killed in front of the courthouse, that is.

The moment he sees his chance, he pounces. Or, more literally, he limps.

But the limping is what draws Carmichael in. The Southern charm that was instilled in him since birth will be what gets her to stay.

That’s his plan, anyway.

Funny thing about plans...they never seem to work out how you expect them to.

Love this series!!

I love this series. The story was amazing and the narration was ok but didn’t enjoy it as much as I did with Lord Have Mercy and Hissy Fit. I didn’t think the voices marched the characters, but all in all I enjoyed listening.

Great story!

Loved this story! The narrators are great, but obviously did not listen to the previous books in the series and changed the pronunciation of a name (from ‘Raylee’ to ‘Rolley’) which grated on my nerves. Also, Croft sounded like he was raised in the Midwest instead of Texas.

Finally We Got Croft!

I have been waiting for years for Croft to get his story. The first 2 books in this series were the very first books I read by Lani and not only was I hooked, but she bulldozed her way to my number 1 favorite author. I have read every one of her books and most of them multiple times…yes…she is that good! Now, on to my review:

Story: 5 Stars
I have been so very excited for Croft’s story and she didn’t disappoint! I don’t want to give spoilers, so let me just say that Croft and Carmichael’s characters are the perfect compliment to each other. The yummy scenes are as yummy as usual for a Lani book and I liked that the suspense in the book wasn’t extreme. I love suspense in a book, but there are a few of Lani’s books where the suspense or the tragedy are extremely intense and those are the ones I have read 1 time. They are always great books, so I’m never disappointed, But as a serious reader you can get very involved then a book and extreme suspense is just not my jam. Quit Bein’ ugly had the perfect blend of suspense, humor, romance, and yummy scenes.

Performance: 2 Stars
Let me start off by saying it is extremely hard for me to push the two star button for a Lani Lynn Vale book. Maxine Mitchell was amazing as always. I absolutely loved her and her voice and her performance were perfect for Carmichaels character. She did a great job with the tone of her voice in all scenes for Carmichael and including the ones that she read as Croft’s voice. What I wish audible would do is allow us to write stars for performance separately for each narrator. Because, if we could do that I would give Maxine Mitchell five stars. However, Lance Greenfield was painful to listen to in the story. His tone, in my opinion, constantly came across as every single sentence was in preparation for those “Oh my God!” Moments. It was very distracting and very annoying. His voice did not match with cross character at all. I enjoyed the book more when it was just Maxine narrating. I love books with multiple narrator‘s, Lance Greenfield was just not a good fit for this book. So, the two stars for the performance are only for Lance Greenfield.

Overall: 5 Stars
I’m giving five stars overall for this audiobook. I don’t want my two star rating for the performance to affect the overall of this audiobook. The story was absolutely fantastic and Maxine was freaking perfect and Lance was the only part that I did not enjoy.
But please please please do not make the decision to skip over this book we’re not listen to it based off of my review of Lance. This book was awesome and I do not regret purchasing it and I would still listen to it over and over again as I have with many of Lani Lynn Vale‘s books.

If you are a fan of Lonnie, snatch this book up! You won’t regret it. If you have never read Lonnie before, I would highly recommend listening to her book Hissy Fit before you listen to this one. The only reason for that is because if you end up feeling the same way about Lance as I did, I don’t want you to judge the remainder of Lani Lynn Vale’s books because of this. Every book she has that is an audiobook I have listen to you and have loved every single one of her narrators, so this was a first for me. So, if you’re not sure if you want this book or not, let me make the decision for you and tell you that yes you do!

Great story but bad male narration

Please go back to the other male narrators. I almost stopped listening because of him. He sounds angry and doesn’t have the correct inflection for what he’s reading. I’ve listened to every LLV book in order and this is the first one I haven’t enjoyed due to the narrator.

Love these books!

How great it was to revisit these old friends! I always loved this series. Everybody is so crazy, can't and fun. You can't help but fall in love with Croft in this book. He was such a putz at times but he was clueless, gotta love him!!! Thanks for giving us another story in this world! You're awesome Lani Lynn Vale! The narration is spot on! Lance Greenfield and Maxine Mitchell make a great team. And I swear Maxine's male voice is freaking hot!!!🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍

Southern gentlemen

So where is the southern accent?!?
The first two books in the series didn’t have southern accented narrators either but at least they were not as strongly not southern as this one.

Took me a while

I love her books usually but it took me forever to get through this one. I don’t know if it’s all the CrossFit stuff or what but I kept listening to other things and coming back to this. It (CrossFit) really doesn’t add anything to the story line but gets mentioned all the time. The wedding just made me roll my eyes. I think I’ll stick with the other series she has written and steer clear of anymore set in the “CrossFit cult” (authors words, not mine)
