About this listen

Thirteen weird and wondrous tales populate this anthology by the author of the AIRSHIP DAEDALUS pulp adventure series. Spanning a 30-year catalog and often satirizing the 20th century ideal of the nuclear family and social mores, Primordial Soup Kitchen is a collection of the stranger side of Todd Downing's short fiction.

  • Automatons remember an idyllic past that never was.
  • Ghost hunters track a psychic vampire in 1920s San Francisco.
  • A family must come to grips with a terrible truth.
  • Rockabilly zombies cruise the American Southwest in a classic Cadillac.
  • A Harlem Hellfighter killed at the Western Front and is reborn with strange powers.
  • Four kids investigate a strange disappearance in a small Oregon town in 1982.

With elements of horror, science fiction, adventure, humor, and retro-futurism - each with an underlying dark streak - this collection is sure to entertain fans of the offbeat and macabre.

Fun & Entertaining!

I drive 20 min almost every time I get in the car— I have never listened to short stories before, but I loved being able to get a whole story in on each leg of my trips. The stories were all really fun. A mix of styles, but over all was somewhat Twilight Zone -ish. I love the mystery, the unexpected turns of events, and I was entertained through the whole collection of stories. I also love getting to hear an author read their own stories. ❤️

Light snack or 5 course meal, this kitchen has it!

The title is perfectly written to prepare you for a wonderful, and wonderfully strange, sample of different works. There is comedy and tragedy, action and mystery and more than a little suspense.

I was drawn in by the narration, a pleasing voice with enough alteration to give life to characters but not break the flow of the story. I got this book in the week leading up to Halloween and the timing could not have been better. There was nothing too ghoulish but just the right amount of spook to make a long commute pass more enjoyably in the crisp fall season.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for an easy to get into collection of short stories, you enjoy a variety of flavor in your reading and you have an open mind to a reality just a few degrees off our own.
