One of the first things a private detective learns is that people have secrets, and people with important secrets attract trouble.
When a young woman is brutally murdered in a back alley, the police quickly turn to Alex Lockerby to help them. Hampered by the fallout from his own secrets, Alex goes to work, only to find that the victim in this case had secrets of her own, starting with her identity.
As Alex tries to trace the origins of the mysterious murder victim, a woman comes to his office, begging Alex’s help because she believes the new house she’s purchased is haunted. When Alex investigates the house, he finds that even it holds a secret, one that someone is willing to kill to keep.
With political pressure mounting to solve the murder of the nameless woman, and the tabloids blaming the police for the lack of progress, Alex finds himself caught in a web of secrets, lies, and murder that he might not be able to escape from. Can Alex bring a violent maniac to justice while, at the same time, stopping a methodical killer determined to bury the past forever?

Another Great Book in the Arcane Casebook Series
This book, like all the others in this series, is the perfect blend of Detective Noir and Urban Fiction. This book sees Alex temporarily unable to work magic himself, depending on the magic of his friends and Sorsha to help him solve three cases. It's fast paced and fun, with lots of witty dialog and fun noir tropes. it's also one of the first times that s book has made me crave a hot dog.

I absolutely love this series and this book proves that the main character can survive without using magic which is character development at its finest! I seriously cannot wait until the next one what a cliffhanger

This is my favorite running series
Dan Willis really has some interesting characters and premises in this series. Magic and detectives is a very used conception in fiction/ fantasy, but this series really keeps your interest. Always after finishing I can't wait until Dan's next installment comes out.

Just keeps getting better
This series has so many directions it can go in. the early 1930's time period makes it ripe for all intrigue and the weaving of several mysterious together in one book keeps us from getting bored. Willis keeps Alex so busy we hardly have a chance to figure one case out before the next item pops up and needs attention. Sad I finished it in 2 days of long distance driving.

Love the book
Alex Knox knows how to bring the stories to life. Dan Willis is an excellent writer and I’m sad that I have to wait for another book in this series.
