Acerca de esta escucha

In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. The Counts Lubonski, the petty nobles Bukowksi, and the peasants Buk are at times fiercely united, at others tragically divided. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age. Like the heroic land that is its subject, Poland teems with vivid events, unforgettable characters, and the unfolding drama of an entire nation.

Reseñas editoriales

"Stunning.... An unmatched overview of Polish history.... The families themselves come very much alive, and through them, Poland itself." ( USA Today)

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Engrossing.... A page-turner in the grand Michener tradition." ( The Washington Post)
"A Michener epic is far more than a bedtime reader, it's an experience. Poland is a monumental effort, a magnificent guide to a better understanding of the country's tribulations." ( Chicago Tribune)

Hard to believe anyone could make Michener boring, but Larry Mckever succeeds. Boring, uninflective, bland. Worst narrator at Audible; and I've been a member for over a decade; Other Michener's narrated by others are wonderful.

Terrible narrator

I am tempted to listen again this coming year for it lost my attention a few times in the first half. But I certainly got the message about centuries of hardship. I only wished there was less about aristocracy and more about the common man but the last 10% made up for it. I especially appreciated the last 50 years. I am now intrigued to read more about this country. It’s a wonder it’s still a country.

A long story about hardship of a struggling nation

I read Poland years ago. It is nice to be able to listen to it. I will do so again.

Fascinating and informative!

Not being much of an expert of great music or art, I found “Poland” rather tiresome. I could recognize only a few of the great ones that Michener lauded and I could not follow his descriptions of what it took to be considered great music at all. I did not finish the novel, but the reason I stayed with it as long as I did was the very fine narrator Larry McKee er.

Not Michener’s best

Michener brings to life 800 years of polish history in a single volume…exposing the heart of Poland, the treachery of international politics and how it to our world today. A worthwhile boon with a strong conclusion. Beautifully read.

History that touches the heart.

Great book: made me really better understand the history of Poland (till 1981). so many brave Poles in WWII...

great book

First 10 minutes I thought not going to be good, but everything laid out. Story line with historical people and events blended well with fictional people to round out story. Gave a good understanding of the Polish culture and difference of that country compared to others. Unique. This is a book I am glad I listened to instead of read. I got much more out of it I believe.

Performance really appropriate with story line

I am of Polish ancestry but was aware of just small bits of Poland's history. This book taught me so much and has prompted me to learn more.

What an Engrossing Epic!

I say gripping because the story is unforgettable. I say tedious because so much of Poland’s history repeats itself in hope and hopelessness. They are a resilient, stubborn, courageous and colorful people.

Much like with travel, you cannot get into the minds and hearts of people without having your own mind and heart affected—even changed.

The narrator is perfect. It’s a joy to listen to his rich voice and perceptive storytelling.

Michener, as usual, leaves no stone unturned in unearthing history through the lives of his characters.

Gripping and tedious

Good reading with abysmal pronunciation of Polish words - it's like he didn't even try!
