Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

A remarkable true story of adventure, betrayal, and survival set in one of the world's most inhospitable places. In 1906, from atop a snow-swept hill in the ice fields northwest of Greenland, hundreds of miles from another human being, Commander Robert E. Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

The enthralling and often harrowing history of the adventurers who searched for the Northwest Passage, the holy grail of 19th-century British exploration. After the triumphant end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the British took it upon themselves to complete something they had been trying to do since the 16th century: Find the fabled Northwest Passage, a shortcut to the Orient via a sea route over Northern Canada. For the next 35 years the British Admiralty sent out expedition after expedition to probe the ice-bound waters of the Canadian Arctic in search of a route.

"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

Historia
In Old Man River, Paul Schneider tells the story of the river at the center of America's rich history - the Mississippi. Some fifteen thousand years ago, the majestic river provided Paleolithic humans with the routes by which early man began to explore the continent's interior. Since then, the river has been the site of historical significance, from the arrival of Spanish and French explorers in the 16th century to the Civil War. George Washington fought his first battle near the river, and Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman both came to President Lincoln's attention after their spectacular victories on the lower Mississippi.

The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

Great story well told
It is historic novel at its best. The actual people are (mostly) fictional, but they present in very involving way the history of remote and special piece of land. They also give witness (sometimes credit sometimes quite the opposite) to human nature with its stubbornness, power of will and selflessness as much as with its cruelty, selfishness and criminal single-mindedness. It is very poetic. And well read (yes, the pace is slow but in this case it helps the story, at least in my opinion).

Great listening to Michener
Would you consider the audio edition of Alaska to be better than the print version?
In regards to the negative opinions of the narrator, I agree you have to get used to the almost monotone of the voice. But I encourage you to continue listening as he reads a story to you that is filled with unforgettable facts and characters. Excellent.

Alaska: Educational, Yet Entertaining
Michener weaves history, geography and other educational themes with interesting stories of some of the people who inhabited and traveled to Alaska during the span of many generations. He intertwines stories of adventure, fortune, love and loss intricately, yet with a simplicity that makes it easy to. understand. The narrator reads this book in a quiet soft voice which makes it a perfect evening relaxation activity.

Enjoyable Story, Frustrating Narration
The book is good, enjoyable. I've learned several things about Alaska that I wasn't aware I should know. How a Coast Guard cutter and a college got their names and some towns too. Love it.
The narrator speaks very slowly, fixed that by speeding it up. But his pronouncing place names differently than WE pronounce them -I'm a Tlingit descendant, lifelong Alaskan makes me cringe. Yoon-Alaska instead of Un-Alaska. Ugh.

A Classic
I read this book with a book I think in the 90s to Hawaii which I also loved. I’ve been Hawaii 30 years and realized it was very accurate even though the names are changed and ventured into more Michener, always a commitment and well worth it. I’m heading out on an Alaskan cruise I realized I wanted to brush up on Alaskan history and listened this time to the 57 hours and again feel better educated for it as well as my cruise. Anyone with a curiosity or love of Alaska, are going on a cruise should read this book it will stay with you forever!
