Historia
For five brief, glorious days in the autumn of 1956, the Hungarian revolution gave its people a glimpse at a different kind of future - until, at four o’clock in the morning on a Sunday in November, the citizens of Budapest awoke to the shattering sound of Russian tanks ravaging their streets. The revolution was over. But freedom beckoned in the form of a small footbridge at Andau, on the Austrian border. By an accident of history, it became, for a few harrowing weeks, one of the most important crossings in the world, as the soul of a nation fled across its unsteady planks.

In one of his beloved early bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener crafts a tale of the American men who fought the Korean War, detailing their exploits in the air as well as their lives on the ground. Young and innocent, they arrive in a place they have barely ever heard of, on a ship massive enough to carry planes and helicopters. David Harper is an orphan, seemingly doomed to loneliness and poverty. As an adolescent con artist and petty thief, David spends his days grifting at an amusement park, the place where he first learns about women and the mysteries of love. Soon he discovers that his longing to embrace the world is stronger than the harsh realities that constrain him. Featuring autobiographical touches from Michener's own life story, The Fires of Spring is more than a novel: it's a rich slice of American life, brimming with wisdom, longing, and compassion.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

The Wild West has been tamed and its fierce, independent and often violent larger-than-life figures – gun-toting wanderers, trappers, prospectors, Indian fighters, cowboys, and lawmen –are now victims of their own success. They are heroes who’ve outlived their usefulness.

Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history.

Michener Doesn't Dissappoint
My great grandfather went to the gold fields around 1903 and he was not heard from until his wife had remarried believing he had died. Three years went by and he returned to Minnesota to reclaim his wife and child. I wondered how such a thing could happen but, now I realize it did happen more often than anyone knew. He was quite the figure in our family and this story has helped me understand him more. I loved Michener's wonderful epilogue describing how he studied and researched to ensure this book was authentic. It sure seemed to me that he had the grasp of the whole situation. I've read almost all of Michener's books since I was a young girl. Hawaii was my favorite. I live in the "Centennial" state and you know I had to read that one as well.

So exciting!
I did something I have never done before. About ⅔ of the way through this book, I googled it to find out if there was a happy ending. The story was so exciting and I felt so invested in the characters that I didn't feel I could go on if it were all to end in tragedy.
So I finished the story. There's a lot to be learned about human character, negative and positive, and about endurance from this story.
If you've watched any TV shows about living off the grid, especially in cold climates, you will relate to this book. The only part I did not care for was the final chapter which consists of the author explaining how and why he wrote it. Normally, I like this sort of thing. But this time, I found most of it boring. Only about the last 30 seconds of the final chapter were interesting.
