About this listen

Did Black Sam bury pirate treasure in Port Essex 300 years ago?

After finding an incredibly lucrative Spanish treasure in the Keys of Florida, Black Sam Bellamy decided to leave the pirate life and return to his true love in New England. Before being shipwrecked on the way to retrieve her, he hid his booty with the Chbo So Clan in Port Essex.

“Well, Mr. Wolfe, to get straight to the point, we want you to help us find a lost pirate treasure.”

Clay Wolfe had been slouched in the desk chair of his P.I. office, but now he straightened up and sat forward. His normally natty attire was ruffled, stubble dotted his face, and his eyes were red. “In Port Essex?”

Clay Wolfe, devastated by the death of his grandfather, is hired by an antiques dealer to find a long-lost pirate treasure and finds himself pitted against an unscrupulous sex doll businessman, a motorcycle gang, a greedy salvage boat operator, and other mysterious entities. Also recruited for this treasure hunt is Clay’s crew: Westy, Crystal, Murphy, Cloutier, and of course, Baylee Baker.

And the spark between Clay and his partner, Baylee, finally bursts into flame…

Excellent! A Mystery with a Bang!

Black Sam was a pirate who buried treasure in the Keys of Florida around 300 years ago! Clay Wolfe has been hired to find the treasure but first, he has to recover from the brutal murder of his grandfather. Dead bodies, a motorcycle gang, a questionable sex doll businessman, and more complicates the mystery.

The author, Matt Cost, continues to deliver a captivating and consuming thriller series with this new release. With each new book, listeners gain fresh insights into Clay Wolfe by observing his problem-solving skills and evolving relationships. This one is no different. His characters are developed primarily through dialogue and action, with just enough descriptive detail, making Cost an excellent writer! This book is especially delightful in its character twists and how seamlessly they integrate into the narrative. Each plot twist is skillfully executed, surprising, and detailed, keeping the listener guessing.

The narrator, Jason Arnold, seamlessly transitions into each character, maintaining the smooth flow of the narrative. Arnold excels at portraying each character’s traits and maintaining consistency throughout the narrative and across the series. He is intentional in his delivery and intonation. He is truly Clay Wolfe!

This is an exciting addition to the series! I loved the characters brought in and the romantic feelings between Clay and Baylee are brought to the front in an intentional and skillful manner.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.

Matt Cost tells a dramatic and mystery tale

Matt Cost tells a dramatic and mystery tale in Pirate Trap

In Pirate Trap, the reader once again is brought into the lives of Clay and his partner, Baylee. did read the print version of the story, and enjoyed it, but I also really enjoyed this audiobook. This narration really brought this story to life. It is a story worth waiting for, especially when venturing the private chemistry between Clay and Baylee. Pirate Trap is part of the Clay Wolfe / Port Essex Mystery Book series, and this is volume five. I am a big fan of Matt Cost and read whatever this author writes and listen to whatever he puts on audiobook. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. I recommend reading and listening to all the books in this series, and then listen to this one. I also recommend looking into other of Matt Cost's books, because this is a writer you don't want to miss, and his ability to tell a story using various genres, without the stereotypical plot of detectives or mystery. Clay is an unforgettable character, and one of my favorite detectives, and I can't forget Baylee, a tenacious and formidable character, a complement to Clay's edginess. Pirate Trap is action-packed all the way to the end, as this story brings the listener along for the interesting journey of treasure hunting and hidden pirate treasure. Clay is still reeling over a loss when he is hired to find a treasure, rumored to be buried in Port Essex. He and Baylee, along with the rest of his crew, have to go up against a lot of unscrupulous and dangerous people, without getting killed, and to find the truth behind the pirate's hidden treasure, if it exists, and what does it actually contain. Definitely a very unpredictable story, my favorite kind! Magnificent story kept this reader hanging on every word of the story. Pirate Trap on audiobook is a definite listening recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to listening to many more titles by this author. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who listens to this book to also write a review.
