About this listen

This Audible Original Drama of Peter Pan takes listeners on a magical adventure with Peter, Wendy, Michael and John as they arrive in Neverland and take on Captain Hook with the help of Tiger Lilly and Tinker Bell.

The story begins at home in London during The Blitz, and Mary Darling is planning to evacuate her children to the countryside. However, her plans take an unexpected turn when a familiar face from her childhood returns...the one and only Peter Pan, the mysterious boy from Kensington Gardens. Intrigued by their mother’s friend, Wendy, Michael and John seek Peter Pan out, resulting in them being whisked off to Neverland and setting up home with Peter, Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys.

As Peter and his gang come up against the wickedly evil Captain Hook, their friendships and relationships are put to the test - can Wendy be honest with Peter about how she really feels, and will Michael and John return home without their sister?

Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince, My Best Friend’s Wedding) stars as Captain Hook alongside Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions, Killing Eve) as Smee, Gerran Howell (Catch-22, Emerald City) as Peter Pan and Eleanor Worthington Cox (Maleficent, Britannia) as Wendy alongside a full cast.

To mark the launch of this drama, Audible will be donating to Great Ormond Street Hospital, to whom J.M. Barrie unexpectedly and generously gifted his copyright of Peter Pan.

Performed by: Adeel Akhtar, Mariska Ariya, Catherine Bailey, Rupert Everett, Neil Frost, William Harper, Gerran Howell, Simon Kane, Mack Keith Roach, Rocco Padden, Richard Reed, Maya Shepelev, Louis Suc, Harry Tuffin and Eleanor Worthington-Cox.

About the Performer

BAFTA award-winning actor Adeel Akhtar is widely known for his roles in Netflix’s original film Murder Mystery, starring opposite Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, and The Nest opposite Jude Law. He also starred in the BBC's adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic Les Misérables opposite Olivia Coleman and Lily Collins. For his performance as Monsieur Thénardier, he received high praise with Jasper Rees writing for the Arts Desk, "The most seductive performance of all was Adeel Akhtar, who channeled the spirit of Fagin as the chancer Thénardier. Whenever he was on screen, Les Misérables crackled with a keen, malign energy. He genuinely looked like a rat in human form, a creature of the shadows, unclean both inside and out." Akhtar was also in the BBC comedy Back to Life opposite Daisy Haggard, and had a guest starring role in the second season of the critically acclaimed thriller Killing Eve (BBC America). In 2017, Akhtar starred in the Academy Award-nominated comedy The Big Sick and became the first non-white actor to win a BAFTA TV Award in the Leading Actor category for his portrayal of Shazad in Murdered by My Father. Other British credits include Swimming with Men, Victoria & Abdul, The Night Manager, Apple Tree Yard, Capital, Unforgotten, Utopia (for which he received a BAFTA nomination), and the US TV series Ghosted.

About the Performer

Rupert Everett first appeared on stage in 1981 as Guy Bennett in the West End production of Julian Mitchell’s Another Country, a role he repeated in the 1984 film version, for which he earned a BAFTA nomination as Best Newcomer. Subsequent nominations include a BAFTA and Golden Globe for My Best Friend’s Wedding. A writer, director, and actor, Rupert has entertained audiences in theater, film, and television, including directing and writing the 2018 film The Happy Prince about Oscar Wilde. Theater credits include Mass Appeal, Don Juan, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He has also voiced characters in such films as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Shrek 2. Everett has starred in films as diverse as Inspector Gadget and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has also appeared on TV in dramas and documentaries, including Black Mirror and Born to Be Wilde.

About the Performer

Gerran Howell is featured on the big screen in Sam Mendes's 1917 (Universal) and stars in The Song of Names, alongside Clive Owen and Tim Roth. He was a series regular in the high-profile Hulu drama Catch-22, directed by George Clooney. Howell was also a series regular on Emerald City (NBC) and shot guest leads on Genius: Picasso (Fox), This Country (BBC), and Strike Back (Sky HBO).

About the Performer

Named as one of the Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow, rising star Eleanor Worthington-Cox won an Olivier Award at age 10 for her role in the stage musical Matilda and earned a BAFTA nomination for her first lead TV role in The Enfield Haunting. She plays the lead role in Sky Atlantic’s Britannia, and can also be seen as the lead in Paramount’s Action Point, starring opposite Johnny Knoxville, and the BAFTA-winning gothic drama Gwen.

It’s Not the Original Story But My Daughter Loved It

Like many other reviewers I was quickly disappointed to discover that I was not listening to the original novelization of Peter Pan. I suppose my clue should have been that it is listen as an “Audible Original”, but given the many other disappointed reviewers, it would seem Audible should have done a better job communicating that this was new dramatized adaptation. Some of my disappointments about the changes are also similar to others; especially changing the time period to WWII London air raids. Also the Lost Boys having a working radio was odd. Changing the “Indians” to the Lost Girls made sense to me, to the point I wish they did more with them.

Despite my complaints, I gave it 4 stars. The reason for this is that my daughter loved it. She began telling me how she dreamed of going to Neverland, and I realized she finally did it. My daughter finally discovered the land of Faerie! She didn’t just enjoy the story, but tasted the wonder and desire that is part of the the reason Tolkien calls the land of Faerie “The Perilous Realm”. As a life long lover of the genre of fantasy, it brings my heart great delight to see my daughter made this discovery. And I have this Audible adaption of Peter Pan to thank for it.

revisionist historical view

For my part, I like the version of Little Red Ridinghood where the wolf ate grandma because the wolf ate grandma and that gives you a picture of what stories were like during that time period. The constant need to inject feminine heroes like creating the tribe of Lilly and deleting the lost boys is in my view revisionist. I am all for heroin stories, there are many historical examples and many yet to be written, but I don't think we should go medaling about changing classics to fit modern values. Every piece should be observed and judges by the context of the time it was written.
