Practical Advice

This book is very practical if you are looking for some guidelines to start, build, maintain, and mend relationships. More important than the actions is the logic behind those actions which the author did well to bring to the surface.

Very helpful

I enjoyed this audio book a lot because I just became a youth pastor and needed some insight and encouragement in this area. I would be considered as an introvert, prone to think more than talk. I was glad to find this book, so that I can be all that our young adults need me to be and all that God has called me to be. I know that as I apply what was mentioned in this book I will grow. I plan to listen to this regularly and share it with my own children.

This is Not a Book 'For Youth Pastors'

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Maybe. The biggest problem with this book isn't the content, it's the title. This is a book on people skills BY a youth pastor. It is not a book specifically for youth pastors. The book is a good collection of practices to have good people skills. So I could imagine recommending the book to someone. But it's in NO WAY a useful resource specifically for youth pastors.

Do you think People Skills for Youth Pastors needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The book could use either a retitle, massive re-write, or a follow up. The book does not explore the unique social dynamics which youth pastors face. As a youth pastor you have to relate to teenagers, earn the respect and trust of their parents, and operate as a professional. This book does not explore this unique dynamic.Likewise the illustrations and examples in the book are virtually never specific to the role of a youth pastor. I can actually only think of one example in the book which related to youth ministry. It would seem there could easily be a re-write or follow up book which takes the 33 skills listed in the book and simply applies them to the different people youth pastors interact with (middle school students, high schoolers, college interns, volunteers, parents, fellow staff/church leaders, and other work relationships).

Any additional comments?

I don't mean to be as negative as my comments would indicate. If the book was titled, "People Skills," I probably would have given it an additional star. But since the book presents itself as "For youth pastors," it does not fulfill that purpose.
