Publisher's summary

In Our Mothers, Ourselves, Henry Cloud and John Townsend show how understanding how our mothers have profoundly influenced our lives can set us on a path toward wholeness and growth.

No one has influenced the person you are today like your mother. The way she handled your needs as a child has shaped your worldview, your relationships, your marriage, your career, your self-image - your life. Our Mothers, Ourselves can help you identify areas that need reshaping, to make positive choices for personal change, and to establish a mature relationship with Mom today.

  • The Phantom Mom
  • The China Doll Mom
  • The Controlling Mom
  • The Trophy Mom
  • The Still-the-Boss Mom
  • The American Express Mom

You'll learn how your mom affected you as a child and may still be affecting you today. Our Mothers, Ourselves is a biblical, realistic, and empowering route to wholeness and growth, to deeper and more satisfying bonds with your family, friends, and spouse - and to a new, healthier way of relating to your mother.

Transformation Tool

This book assists the reader in understanding and addressing their wounds, pain, and unfulfilled needs, guiding them through a process of healing and growth. It also enlightens the reader about differentiating between “What is mine and what is theirs,” helping them to acknowledge their own role in various dynamics and needs. This involves forgiving the roles others played and empowering oneself to develop from that point, equipped with tools and insights previously unavailable.

I loved it

I learned so much about my behaviors and my mom. It’s a relief knowing that I’m not the only one struggling with these issues and feelings.

good introductory book

I've been through a lot of this with therapists and priests over the last 20 years. Just finished this book at the recommendation of my SIL. This would be a great introductory text to anyone beginning the healing journey. I appreciate how the author presents the psychological concepts clearly for the layperson.

Excellent resource

This is a very potent dive into the problems that occur in the mothering relationship and, most importantly, how to resolve them. I will listen to this multiple times.

Now what’s my excuse?

This book help you to see all the players on the field and what their responsibility for and what role each played. This book equips you to know how to make peace yourself with yourself first and then your mother so you begin to appreciate who she is today and stop longing for the mother she wasn’t on yesterday.

Life Altering!

This book not only helps the reader come to terms with wounds, pain, unmet needs, and ways to grow and heal from them, but it also helps the reader come to terms with "What is mine and what is theirs." Essentially owning the part that they have (in the dynamic and for their needs), forgiving the part that others had/have, and being empowered to grow from there and gain the tools that they were not given.
