About this listen
"Do you have any notes for me?" Actors always ask for notes on their performance, and they will take them from just about anyone. Ron Marasco's Notes to an Actor grew out of the actor's profession. In his years as an actor, scholar, and teacher of acting, Mr. Marasco found that most acting books were either outdated classics that were rarely read, or quasi-textbooks that actors only "skimmed." So he developed Notes to an Actor, a compact, user-friendly audiobook geared specifically to the way actors work. The book is based on the innovative idea that notes, given one on one, are the essential tool of creative learning.

Jenna Fischer's Hollywood journey began at the age of 22 when she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of St. Louis. She was determined, confident, and ready to work hard. So, what could go wrong? Uh, basically everything. The path to being a professional actor was so much more vast and competitive than she’d imagined. It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, rejection, and doubt. If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way. Jenna wants to be that person for you.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

On stage and screen, we know a great performance when we see it. But how do actors draw from their bodies and minds to turn their selves into art? What is the craft of being an authentic fake? More than a century ago, amid tsarist Russia’s crushing repression, one of the most talented actors ever, Konstantin Stanislavski, asked these very questions, reached deep into himself and emerged with an answer.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Story
No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Story
The New York Times best-selling biography of an American comedy legend. After three years of sobriety, Chris Farley's life was at its creative peak until a string of professional disappointments chased him back to drugs and alcohol. He fought hard against them, but it was a fight he would lose in December 1997. Farley's fans immediately drew parallels between his death and that of his idol, John Belushi. Without looking deeper, however, many failed to see that Farley was much more than just another Hollywood drug overdose. In this officially authorized oral history, Farley's friends and family remember his work and life.

The best book on acting - bar none!
I'm so glad I bought this audio book - it has been invaluable to me as an actor. Ron Marasco is an excellent teacher and I am so glad that he narrated this book instead on another voiceover artist because I feel some of his lessons would have been lost in translation had he not. Buy this book , learn from it, listen to it more than once, follow his advice- you will be doing yourself a favor.

Excellent
One of the best books written on acting around. No self absorbed fluff that many acting books have. This is a very Practical, to the point book with tips and jewels for any aspiring actor.

Really useful and enjoyable
This was great and chock full of concise and precise advice (rhyming unintentional, but kudos to me, I guess?)...HOWEVER, there were many tiny editing mistakes which—while not necessarily detracting from my overall enjoyment—did occasionally make me wonder if I was losing my mind and/or experiencing deja-vu. I only mention it because I know (as a narrator myself) that that sort of thing can drive a certain kind of person crazy, so if you’re that person: be warned. If you can get past that, this book is a rich treasure-trove for the aspiring (or even working) actor.

Excellent content, but needs proofing
First off, excellent content, really insightful and useful information! 5 stars for content and author/narrator.
However, I can't believe this is an AUDIBLE STUDIOS production. there were MANY times where the narration was repeated, or misspoken and then corrected that weren't edited out. I am a narrator for audible books, and I cringe to hear this from the Audible team, who should be as capable at proofing their productions as the independent narrators. C'mon guys, this is a disservice to an excellent book. Fix it.

Excellent Book!!!
I first heard of Ron Marasco's book while listening to Leigh Foster's podcast "Action: The Pursuit of Acting Excellence," where Mr. Marasco, is a frequent guest on the show. The book is full of helpful information for the beginning actor, BUT I also believe the experienced actor would benefit from Mr Marasco's words.
