About this listen

Instant New York Times bestseller

The long-awaited first work of nonfiction from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a deliriously entertaining, wickedly intelligent cinema book as unique and creative as anything by Quentin Tarantino.

In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.

The audiobook is narrated by Edoardo Ballerini, and features Quentin Tarantino reading the first and last chapters. A perfect listen for all fans!

First off QT bookends the audio but most of your listening experience will be with a different narrator that does a fine job. At times he will even sound like QT just because his writing is so clearly written in his style. The book itself is basically Tarantino writing about the movies he enjoyed as a child, a little history on how they were made, received, and impact on the careers of the stars. Hopefully their will be more books of this kind to come after he finishes his last film!

Quentin doesn’t narrate but that’s ok!

Quentin actually narrating this book makes this book a cinema lover’s dream come true! He is and will always be the master of film!

I very much enjoyed listening to Tarantino regale about movies, directors and actors that he both enjoys, and critiques as well. I learned and was wildly fascinated by listening to the depths of his knowledge, facts and his personal history with films he wrote about in his book. QT, thank you for a spellbinding journey!

Great listen!

Like most audiobooks, when you see more than one name, other than the writer, himself or herself, usually what you get is the trouble chapters from the writer, then maybe a couple chapters from the secondary person, etc., etc. This book itself was really enjoyable, but I expected more than just one and a half chapters from Quentin himself reading the book to us. And that was very disappointing.

Quentin only reads the 1st & Last chapters (?!)

Learned A LOT.

I only wish Tarantino had read the entire thing. Ballerina is great, but nobody can stand in for QT’s voice.

Superior

Exactly what I signed up for and more when deciding to read a book that is basically just Tarantino talking about movies he likes (and a few he doesn’t).

Excellent
