About this listen

If you thought being over 40 meant the end of adventures, then you're in for a shock as Bree and her ragtag bunch take you on a side-splitting roller-coaster ride!

Stuck with Alan's ghost following her around, Bree is in hot water now with no easy way out as she's been framed for his murder and plunked in the local pokey.

If that weren't bad enough, Gran's ghost has been kidnapped, and all clues point to the Big Easy - New Orleans.

With the police on her never-mind-the-size butt, two men vying for her attentions, and a mystery wrapped around the murder of her Gran and ex, she has more than enough to keep her stressed and turning prematurely gray.

So when a local coven stirs things up in NOLA and a new nemesis appears on the scene, Bree is ready to meet them head-on.

As soon as she's popped a few Advil.

Awesome!

I’m fully hooked into this story now. Even though there is still the odd reference or two concerning Bree’s advanced age, it’s not every other sentence like the first two books. Makes it so much more enjoyable to bask in the heroine’s obvious awesomeness. Shannon is such an incredibly imaginative and skilled writer, and Fortgang is a stellar talent who brings all of it to life. The descriptions are so colorful, and the delivery is so perfect the listener is able to “see” it all happening like it’s being projected onto a movie screen. Fortgang’s narration is done with an earnest commitment to entertain and she doesn’t miss her mark. It is refreshing to have the romance not be the focus or purpose of the story. It’s still in there, and there is some action, but it’s served on the side and it isn’t the main course. Gonna dive into the next book because I’m on a binge!

Whirlwind adventures

As if her hometown isn’t full of enough adventure, Bree is on the hunt for her grand spirit and it takes her to New Orleans and a whole lists of adventures! There’s never a dull
Moment in her life with Missing ghost, an x husband she can’t get rid of, a few king, siren, werewolf and fairy in her team she’s always got her hands full. Figuring out who she can trust is the name of the game and it’s making fighting the bad guys and finding her family hard.

Bree takes a beating but in true hero fashion, she pops some Advil, creaks in a few places and then keeps going! I love her grit and determination. And the story line stays fresh and keeps you on your toes as to what’s happening next.

I love the narrator that was picked she does a great job bringing the motley crew of paranormals to life.

So relatable

This book is the most relatable book of the series so far
It had so many different emotions that any woman would go through in life
It felt more emotionally mature too
The physical and spicy parts were not bad at all
Pretty good pace of story development

Fun read, well done.

Series Info/Source: This is the fourth book in the Forty Proof series. I listened to this on audiobook from Audible. The fifth book in this series, Midlife Zombie Hunter, is planned to release in June of 2021.

Audiobook Quality (4/5): The audiobook was really well done. No complaints at all. The narrator has been doing a great job with this series.

Story (4/5): Bree’s Gran’s ghost has been kidnapped and it’s up to Bree to get her back. The trail leads to NOLA where Bree ends up involved with both Gran’s coven and another coven of dark witches. The mystery here is very well done, it ties into the overall story nicely. The story moves at a good pace and is very entertaining. This is a fun read that I really enjoyed.

Characters (4/5): I loved the inclusion of some of Gran’s coven members into the story. We meet some interesting characters in addition to the new coven members as well. Mayer does an awesome job of creating characters that are engaging, intriguing and easy to enjoy.

Setting (4/5): The NOLA setting was well done. It’s so weird that I just read another book set in NOLA (Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab). It was fun to leave the Savannah, Georgia setting and venture out into a new area. It really helps the reader to get a broader sense of this paranormal world.

Writing Style (4/5): This has been a very well written series and it just keeps getting better. There is a good mystery here and interesting magic. The story moves at a great pace and the characterization is well done. This was another fun installment in this series that I really enjoyed. Early on in this series I had complaints about man-bashing and excessive lectures about old age. However, either I am used to it or those issues have gone away because they aren’t bothering me anymore.

My Summary (4/5): Overall this was another very solid entry into this urban fantasy series. I really enjoy this world, the mystery, and the awesome characters here. This is well written and very fun to read. I definitely plan on continuing with the series.

This a great series for any woman doubting herself after 40. A strong female character with a wonderful pack of new friends.
