About this listen

Perhaps the most notorious war criminal of all time, Josef Mengele was the embodiment of bloodless efficiency and passionate devotion to a grotesque worldview. Aided by the role he has assumed in works of popular culture, Mengele has come to symbolize the Holocaust itself as well as the failure of justice that allowed countless Nazi murderers and their accomplices to escape justice.

As chief of investigative research at the Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations in the 1980s, David G. Marwell worked on the Mengele case. Drawing on his own experience as well as new scholarship and sources, Marwell examines Mengele's life and career. He chronicles Mengele's university studies; his wartime service both in frontline combat and at Auschwitz, where his "selections" sent innumerable innocents to their deaths and his "scientific" pursuits traumatized or killed countless more; and his postwar flight from Europe and refuge in South America.

Mengele describes the international search for the Nazi doctor in 1985 that ended in a cemetery in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the dogged forensic investigation that produced overwhelming evidence that Mengele had died - but failed to convince those who, arguably, most wanted him dead. This is the riveting story of science without limits, escape without freedom, and resolution without justice.

Not bad but….

If you’re looking for a forensic overhaul of the case, then this might be of interest to you, but if you’re looking more for a biographical, sketch, you might want to try a different book.

A Good Lesson in Historical Investigative Techniques

This book is probably better received by someone who is interested more in sorted details of the post war Anti-Nazi trials rather than the tales of the actual events that happened in the concentration camps.
I would have liked much more detail about the actual experiments that Mengele was accused of being involved in. Some detail was provided about the sorting process of prisoners as they entered the camps, but that is about the extent of the details surrounding the alleged deeds of the famous Doctor of Death. The investigative process that led to Megeles’ final death proclamation is covered extensively, possibly to a fault; however, it leaves no doubt that Mengele is dead. What is not known is how Mengeles quality of life really was during the years while he was on the run. These details would have been a valuable inclusion into this book.

Was looking….

I was looking for more information on the actual medical experiments that were done to these poor people. Mendele is burning in hell for what he did but his back story was somewhat interesting.

Pushed through it

Beginning is good but once we get to the investigation of dead Mengele it’s unbearable. I listened to these parts on walks at 2.25X. Interesting part about his son at the end. Not what I was expecting at all. Meh meh.
