About this listen

Murder links past and present once again in this mind-boggling metafictional mystery from Anthony Horowitz featuring detective Atticus Pünd and editor Susan Ryeland, stars of the New York Times bestsellers Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders.

Editor Susan Ryeland has left her Greek island, her hotel and her Greek boyfriend, Andreas, in search of a new life back in England.

Freelancing for a London publisher, she's given the last job she wants: working on an Atticus Pünd continuation novel called Pünd’s Last Case. Worse still, she knows the new writer. Eliot Crace is the troubled grandson of legendary children’s author Miriam Crace who died twenty years ago. Eliot is convinced she was murdered—by poison.

To her surprise, Susan enjoys reading the manuscript which is set in the South of France and revolves around the mysterious death of Lady Margaret Chalfont, days before she was about to change her will. But when it is revealed that Lady Margaret was also poisoned, alarm bells begin to ring.

The more Susan reads, the clearer it becomes that Eliot has deliberately concealed clues about his grandmother’s death inside the book.

Desperately, Susan tries to prevent Eliot from putting himself in harm’s way—but his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic. Another murder follows . . . and suddenly Susan finds herself to be the number one suspect.

Once again, the real and the fictional worlds have become dangerously entangled. And if Susan doesn't solve the mystery of Pünd’s Last Case, she could well be its next victim.

I kept getting lost in the complimentary story lines. It was enjoyable but not as imaginative as the earlier books. More predictable.

Complicated

I thought it was terrific. And those who love puzzles this is for you.I think Anthony Horowitz is the best mystery novelist England has produced. Look forward watching The film on PBS.

Best of the series and worth the wait.

I now feel like Susan and Atticus are old friends! I can't imagine Horowitz's words performed by anyone else than Leslie & Tim. I can't wait to watch this book on PBS. I thought it the best of the three with an excellent plot, well developed characters and a book within a book.lidten and enjoy! I highly recommend it! I get lost in their world which is the highest tribute to any book I read. Thank you, again, Mr. Horowitz! Wonderful!

such a joy!

It continues Horowitz’s signature style of blending a contemporary whodunit with a classic detective novel. He is my favorite author.

Excellent Mystery. Excellent Audiobook.

I loved the other two books, but I almost want to start this one over again and catch everything again. I loved it. I can’t wait to start the TV series.

Best yet

Enjoyed revisiting the characters and the twist on the story telling is good, but some things were a little to obvious

Good, but meandering at times

Liked all of it, with the inner story really working much more than the one in Moonflower Murders.

so sorry to say goodbye to Susan Ryland!

Marble Hall Murders> is a rare gem—a third installment in a series that not only holds its own, but might actually be my favorite so far. Susan Ryeland, having left behind her life in Greece, returns to England and begins a new chapter as a freelance book editor. She’s soon pulled back into the world of Atticus Pünd when a new author is commissioned to continue the series following Alan Conway’s death in Magpie Murders. Susan is brought on board to guide the project.

But things quickly unravel. The new writer takes a page out of Conway’s playbook—using the novel to take thinly veiled jabs at his family and acquaintances. Even more shockingly, he uses the manuscript to expose the long-unsolved murder of his own grandmother, a renowned author.

Having recently watched Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders on PBS, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the Atticus Pünd character, thanks in large part to Tim McMullan’s portrayal—he brings an irresistible charm to the role. Hearing McMullan narrate alongside the ever-brilliant Lesley Manville, who reprises her role as Susan Ryeland, makes this audiobook an absolute standout. Their voices bring the characters and atmosphere vividly to life—an inspired casting choice that enhances the entire experience.

Best in the series so far

Wow, this book is absolutely brilliant! From the first page to the last, I was completely engrossed in the intricate plot and Horowitz's masterful storytelling. He has such a unique way of blending suspense, clever twists, and engaging characters and although I'd guessed the end it didn't spoil my enjoyment, infact I was excited to find out if I was correct.
This latest novel has definitely solidified his place as my favorite author. If you're a fan of crime fiction or just a great story, you absolutely have to read this one!

Better than Agatha
