About this listen

Winner of the 2024 Audie Award for Autobiography/Memoir

THE NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER

The renowned and bestselling memoir—written with “insight, truth, and passion” (Sir Ian McKellen)—from iconic, beloved actor and living legend Sir Patrick Stewart.

From his acclaimed stage triumphs to his legendary onscreen work, Sir Patrick Stewart has captivated audiences around the world and across multiple generations in a career spanning six decades with his indelible command of stage and screen. No other British working actor enjoys such career variety, universal respect, and unending popularity, as witnessed through his seminal roles—whether as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame, Professor Charles Xavier of Marvel's X-Men hit movie franchise, his more than forty years as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, his unforgettable one-man show adapted from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, or his comedic work in American Dad!, Ted, Extras, and Blunt Talk, among many others. Now, he presents his stunning memoir, a revealing portrait of a driven artist whose astonishing life—from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire, England, to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim—proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself.

Critic reviews

“I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness, and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world—all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart.” —Michael Chabon

“Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth, and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!” —Sir Ian McKellen

“There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny, and up for anything. He is a kind man…compassionate and sensitive….but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself.” —Whoopi Goldberg

Incredible! So much more than a memoir

I can't even begin to describe how good this is the way Patrick Stewart tells his story is so pleasant and unique I really can't put into words how the well this is done, story and production, Stewart narrating goodness is fantastic And to be honest, I was not sure if I would like that or not but Stewart puts all his heart into it, I feel it is something special unlike anything I've heard before.

Anyone looking for a good memoir should listen to this even If you're not familiar with Sir Patrick Stewart It doesn't matter the story holds its weight by itself.

For the fans of Patrick Stewart It is indeed everything you could want and way way more So sit back, relax and take a journey with Jean-Luc Picard.

I do want to add thank you mister Stewart Thank you for a lifetime of watching you on the Enterprise and the big screen And if aliens ever did visit earth I would pick you to represent humanity. Seriously I would

Truly Excellent!

I loved this memoir. Sir Patrick reads his beautiful story with humor and grace. He takes the reader through his hard childhood with understanding and care. And his journey through the theater and beyond is wonderful. And while his voice is older and a little more ragged, it’s still a treat to listen to. You will be happy you spent the time with him.

Reflections

What a wonderful performance! So many parallels with my own like story. I really enjoyed listening to this life story, narrated by the author himself, a performance to behold, for sure!!! Listening to the narration added a very special dimension to the book.

Candid

Lovely, open, and warm — Patrick Stewart’s memoir is as delightfully gleeful as the good man himself.

What a lovely man!

Stewart’s memoir is a tale told by someone who has considered their life and legacy, and he’s generous with his conclusions, no matter how unfavorable they may deem him. Of course as a Star Trek fan I wish there were more anecdotes from that period in his life, but over 70+ years those times were but a small fraction.

A delight!

I know and love Patrick Stewart for his Star Trek performances, but it was so wonderful and interesting to learn about his childhood and life as a Shakespearean actor. And his performance made me feel like I was listening to an old friend telling stories. It was a wonderful listen!

The Sir Patrick You Never Knew!

Like many people, my introduction to Patrick Stewart came with Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was not a great intro, but I came to love the character. Later, I learned more about Sir Patrick. However, this book completely opened the kimono to his simple childhood, brushes entertainment royalty, to his own knighthood, and the loves of his life. A truly amazing memoir of a life well lived. Bravo Sir Patrick!
