Acerca de esta escucha

"A key to the audiobook’s success for fans is its all-star cast — a strong advantage here for audio over print. When a “Next Generation” cast member speaks in 'Fan Fiction,' from Patrick Stewart to Marina Sirtis, it’s that actor’s actual voice you’re hearing." -- The Providence Journal

"Incredible production values (one of the best soundscapes I’ve ever heard, honestly) and some interesting insights from Spiner..."- Locus

This program is read by the author with LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Genie Francis, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Patrick Stewart, and a full cast.

Brent Spiner’s explosive and hilarious novel is a personal look at the slightly askew relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this noir comedy might just be the one.

Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance.

Featuring a cast of characters from Patrick Stewart to LeVar Burton to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, to some completely imagined, this is the fictional autobiography that takes listeners into the life of Brent Spiner, and tells an amazing tale about the trappings of celebrity and the fear he has carried with him his entire life.

Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of “Fandom.”

"Incredible production values (one of the best soundscapes I’ve ever heard, honestly) and some interesting insights from Spiner..." —Locus

"[A] diverting memoir-mystery hybrid...Spiner’s debut is an homage to fans: where would celebrities be without them?" —Publishers Weekly

"Like the man himself, this book is funny, sharp, and brilliant. You’re going to love it, and Brent, even if you’ve never heard of “Star Trek”. It’s one of the most entertaining books ever written about entertainment." —Phil Rosenthal (creator, writer, producer), creator of Everybody Loves Raymond and star of Somebody Feed Phil

Best narration of any audiobook, ever.

Best narration of any audiobook, ever. I've heard Neverwhere read by Benedict Cumberbatch/Natalie Dormer/James McAvoy and Octopussy read by Tom Hiddleston but this cast on Fan Fiction is still top spot for narration.

This story induces cringing, but handles cringy subjects artfully. If this Fan Fiction Mem-noir were published on AO3, it might benefit from trigger warning tags for stalking, childhood abuse, drug use, gun violence, psychiatric malpractice and abusive relationships. I found it entertaining and positive overall, with a satisfactory resolution.

Also I laughed so much... they should have released this book on Sunday because it's a 10/10!

Who knew...

I'm still trying to figure out if the things he wrote about happened or, as the title implies, is just a bit of fiction revolving around him. Regardless, Brent Spiner is funny and insightful in this. A fun little ride.

unexpected story with great characters and reading

This kept me engaged through to the climax - had unexpected depth and story - I cannot imagine reading this, as listening to Brent Spiner read this (and so many other Star Trek actors), was amazing. This fictional autobiography was funny, scary, intriguing, and well worth the listen.

I didn't know what to think

It was a good story, though it had me rolling my eyes more than once.

Brent Spiner has a great voice for narration, as do the others listed in this cast! I particularly enjoyed this aspect of the audiobook.

You want it darker.

With this book, Spiner has given all his adult fans and any random afficianados of either Hollywood memoirs or gothic romance a charming present. There's sex, there's violence, there's cheeky irreverent humor. Like any worthwhile writer, he weaves philosophical observations throughout the blended fantasy and realism of the story. In the audio performance, LeVar Burton and Patrick Stewart hilariously lampoon themselves. Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden and Michael Dorn also voice their charicatured alter-egos in -- sadly -- not quite so spectacular a fashion. The story, which is dark, certainly could have gone even darker -- this is no Twin Peaks or Naked Lunch, and doesn't bring the full tilt paranoia you might expect from Philip K Dick, for example. Nevertheless, it's a satisfying work of art, an homage to both Star Trek and film noir. Any negative or even especially ambivalent reviews you might encounter are doubtless from critics who are ... not truly fans, and therefore cannot understand the work and all that it has to say.

Really very good!

Surprisingly good mystery from actor Brent Spiner, who played Commander Data, the android, on Star Trek, the Next Generation. Spiner sprinkles in plenty of bio info about his early life and abusive step-father. Here he’s stalked by an obsessive fan during the show's production in the late 1980s. He effectively tosses false leads into the narrative, like a good mystery writer, reads the book, and is helped by fellow-actor’s in the show, who play themselves. I especially liked the details about how a TV show is filmed, the long work days, the problems with his make-up (like getting it off and needing skin treatments), etc. Really very good.

About time!

Definitely a fun book that I enjoyed. I love that Mr. Spiner has done this, both writing the book and reading his work, with his friends. 👍👍

Takes a minute to get going, but then, intriguing!

I bought the book for Brent to sign at Fan-X. I told him I would give it a terrific review.
Well, while it started out a little slow, but once he found his voice, it was intriguing!
It really is an interesting read. After reading other reviews, I purchased the audio as well and it made the experience so much better! As fun as it is to have him tell the story, it is a delight to hear his friends (Star Trek cast mates) as well!
If you enjoy industry info and intrigue, you'll love this story!

The O.G. Picard Season Three

This story is wildly amusing all by itself -- as in, it didn't have to be Brent Spiner enduring the events of this story, but the fact that it was racheted up the funny.

I expected to be amused, but not quite as amused as I was throughout.

This story is ridiculous, although I do wish I knew how much of the events described are only minor alterations of real life.

The narrator is the worst though: It's like he doesn't even understand the main character's motives. 😂🤣
