About this listen
To politicians and parents, Mortal Kombat was a menace to society. To gamers, it was a way of life. From dedicated hustlers who put thousands of miles on their odometers driving coast to coast to challenge the top players in arcades, to fans who devote their free time to collecting action figures, setting world records, and plumbing the depths of its lore, the Mortal Kombat franchise has topped sales charts for thirty years, and its popularity shows no signs of waning.
But before Mortal Kombat offended politicians and sold over 12 million units (and counting), executives at Midway saw it as filler—a stopgap between more promising games like NBA Jam.
Cocreators Ed Boon and John Tobias felt differently. But not even they could have imagined the phenomenon Mortal Kombat would become when it hit arcades in October 1992, or the controversy that would follow in its wake.
Based on extensive interviews, Long Live Mortal Kombat: Round 1 chronicles the arcade era of the video game industry's most infamous fighting series, the creative and technical hurdles its team had to clear, and the personal stories of the fans whose passion has made Mortal Kombat a pillar of popular culture.

Story
In 1980, computers were instruments of science and mathematics, military secrets and academia. Stern administrators lorded over sterile university laboratories and stressed one point to the wide-eyed students privileged enough to set foot within them: Computers were not toys. Defying authority, hackers seized control of monolithic mainframes to create a new breed of computer game: the roguelike, cryptic, and tough-as-nails adventures drawn from text-based symbols instead of state-of-the-art 3-D graphics.

Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history - Doom and Quake - until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry.

A mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video-game industry. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video-game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But all that would change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a former Mattel executive who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles.

In 2017, after being told that no independent wrestling group could draw a crowd of more than 10,000, a group of wrestlers took up the challenge. For several years, these gladiators had been performing in front of rabid crowds and understood the hunger for wrestling that was different from the TV-slick product. In September 2018, they had the numbers to prove it: 11,263 fans filled the Sears Center Arena for the All In pay-per-view event, ushering in a new era. A year later, WWE had its first major head-to-head competitor in nearly two decades when All Elite Wrestling debuted on TNT.

ECW was one extreme contradiction piled on top of another. It was an incredibly influential company in the world of professional wrestling during the 1990s, yet it was never profitable. It portrayed itself as the ultimate in anti-authority rebellion, but its leadership was, at various points, working covertly with the two wrestling giants, the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling. Most of all, it blurred the line between real life and the fantasy world of professional wrestling like no other company before it.

Caddyshack is one of the most beloved comedies of all time, a classic snobs vs. slobs story of working-class kids and the white-collar buffoons that make them haul their golf bags in the hot summer sun. It has sex, drugs, and one very memorable candy bar, but the movie we all know and love didn't start out that way, and everyone who made it certainly didn't have the word classic in mind as the cameras were rolling.

In the past decade, Hollywood has endured a cataclysm on a par with the end of silent film and the demise of the studio system. Stars and directors have seen their power dwindle, while writers and producers lift their best techniques from TV, comic books, and the toy biz. The future of Hollywood is being written by powerful corporate brands like Marvel, Amazon, Netflix, and Lego, as well as censors in China. Ben Fritz chronicles this dramatic shakeup with unmatched skill, bringing equal fluency to both the financial and entertainment aspects of Hollywood.

When his satirical musings in a college newspaper got him discharged from the Air Force, it became clear to Walt Williams that his destiny in life was to be a writer - he just never thought he'd end up writing video games, let alone working on some of the most successful franchises in the industry - Bioshock, Civilization, Borderlands, and Mafia, among others. Williams pulls back the curtain on an astonishingly profitable industry that has put its stamp on pop culture and yet is little known to those outside its walls.

We’ll written, interesting book
I’m not all that big of an MK fan, but I did play the first one a lot on the Genesis, even if I wasn’t that good at it. But I enjoy hearing about the history of video games and I bought this book in a whim, and was really impressed. This book is very well written, and the reader does a great job as well. There’s a few parts here and there that are obnoxious- where he is taking himself way to seriously and doing the ‘games are art’ routine, and he’ll use some woke talking points, but thankfully those parts are spread out and fairly brief - so i won’t knock any stars for that. But overall it’s just a very interesting, well written book, and I highly recommend it.

An unbiased work
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has had a somewhat negative vision of the franchise. I appreciate the fact that the writer went out of his way to gather perspectives from every angle rather than just seeking a particular view or set of views. Well done!
Feels great to know quite a few people that were quoted throughout the book.

Great book, narration is a bit weird
I really love the story and I’m so glad to hear it. The narrator is actually very good except one thing. He does accents for people who are being quoted and at times they are pretty weird and over the top. Ketchup (who has an English accent in RL) gets quoted many times and the accent isn’t even consistent. At times he sounds like a surfer dude and other times a pretty average American. I find this one tendency of the narrator’s annoying at times but if you are an MK fan, don’t let that dissuade you from buying this. Overall it’s a great book and very well written. I’ll definitely get the next installment when it comes out.

as an Arcade kid, it was a walk down memory lane.
I was already an arcade kid when MK came out. it was a part of the usual rotation, and that's what made this book so fascinating. This book captures the history that is MK not just from a lore perspective it from the perspectives of people who helped influence it from design to arcade dominance. it was an epic uphill battle that the team had to climb to get MK where it is and remains but this book captures the very spirit of that journey. I learned so much from it and as a fan it took me down memory lane more than once. I learned a lot about how this franchise capitalized on the cultural zeitgeist of the time and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves learning about how something as small as a single game can change lives on a global scale. 5 🌟!

Tremendously Detailed and Interesting
I played the first two MK games and dropped off after that but this book primarily covers those two games (plus the third) so I figured it’d be worth a listen. It delves so deep into the history of the game in such detail yet never gets boring or too in the weeds. Not only do you get the history of the games themselves but the culture of the arcades at that time. Absolutely beautifully done!
