About this listen

'Deeply empathetic and profoundly unsettling, this is contemporary crime fiction at its finest' - Dinuka McKenzie

Corinne Gray is a woman whose life is falling apart. When probationary detective Kyle Nazarian unexpectedly knocks on her door on a rainy morning, she knows why. He wants to talk about her son, Ben. This is her chance to finally explain how her sweet-natured child – who loved history and dreamed of swimming for Olympic Gold – grew up to do the unthinkable. What really happened to Ben? And could anyone have prevented it?

Desperate for justice, Corinne has poured herself into uncovering the sinister figures behind her son's actions and the shadowy online communities that prey on vulnerable young people. Kyle, meanwhile, is grappling with his own personal crisis both at home and at work. Torn between his duties and a growing sympathy for Corinne, Kyle must decide how far he's willing to go to help her.

We Need to Talk About Kevin meets None of This Is True in this shattering and provocative psychological thriller that dives into the darkest corners of the internet and the powerful bonds between parents and children, from the bestselling author of Dark Mode.

A very interesting and current story. At first glance this book seems like it could be very one sided, it is not. It really does give fair and realistic play to all aspects and perspectives. I enjoyed the nuance and character depth very much. Narration was great. Highly recommend.

By far my favorite Amazon originals. It’s quite long, but kept me interested the whole time. It was very well written, had me guessing the whole time who done it. The narration was perfect. I highly recommend this book.

I liked the steady pace of the story and how intricately the author tied the details together. The historical references and the connections to ongoing online activities targeting hatred to women was very interesting. “Watching” Ben’s little life change and his anger increase was sometimes painful but the build up was amazingly written.

That was a really good book. Opened my eyes to a few topics that I was really ignorant to before. Thank you.

A sensitive subject for many, the author handled it well. A story that needed to be told from different perspectives.
Would recommend to anyone.

This author did a fantastic job with this book. The story is crafted well, nothing was totally obvious, nothing was cliche, and there were actual surprises at the end. And what impressed me the most is the author's handling of a hot topics. She weaves the topics that come up with the topic of feminism into the lives of the characters, and brings out some topics in ways that never get talked about, without making any of them sound "bad." And the back and forth between what is in the mother's mind, what the reasons are for what she does as a mother, and Ben's perception of it all is absolutely brilliant. And then tying in how his misunderstanding of what his mother was doing leads him to become so vulnerable and open to being groomed by radicals is...it was all just so real and so well done. You feel like you truly understand all the characters. And even while touching on lots of hot topics - in this world where everyone just picks a side and then preaches it constantly, she does no preaching. I am just beyond impressed and will definitely be reading other books by this author!
