About this listen

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s international bestseller Let the Right One In is “a brilliant take on the vampire myth, and a roaring good story” (New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong), the basis for the multi-film festival award-winning Swedish film, the U.S. adaptation Let Me In directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), and the Showtime TV series.

It is autumn 1981 when inconceivable horror comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenager is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last—revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day.

But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door—a girl who has never seen a Rubik’s Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night. . .

An exploration of the complexity of youth (with Vampires)

In this modern age, a good vampire story is quite hard to come by which makes this work all the more enticing. It is likely this book ranks among the darkest of novels but earns that title not through shock factor or traditional terror but by showing a reality so stark it will make you believe it’s a true story. Amazingly, and even more fascinating and disturbing, is that this is not even the heart of the tale. Childhood and the difficulties that come with it is the focus of this darkness, a pitch black that is inconceivably deep and yet never completely obscures the wonder and lightness of being young. The juxtaposition of eternal existence as a damned creature, cursed to live forever as a child, with the loss of innocence that traditionally signifies childhood’s end is a masterstroke by Lindqvist that makes this book so much more than the sum of its parts.

So Mixed on This One

This was a wierd book for me. It started off so slow that I almost stopped in the first hour. I held and and it soon started to get good, then it died down again, then it got really good, and then just kinda ended abruptly with no follow through. I'm not sad I spent time on it, but I'm also not exactly thrilled.

Well-written Horror Story

Narrator fabulous.
well-written
story dark and sad.
themes of child abuse, torture, bullying, alcoholism, addiction.
the sodomizing zombie was an original touch
disappointing that the tale basically promotes violence as a way to solve problems

Weird, tragic, disturbing, heartfelt

This is a character driven story. Something most books I read fail to accomplish. These character feel like they’re children. All the characters, even the disgusting ones, have motive, morals, sympathy, ect. The plot is good but it’s the characters that make it great.

Weird, Challenging, Surprising, and Satisfying

Crazy how a plot with such a strong Supernatural presence can be the novel that drives home such big, and important truths about human nature. The inner dialogue and conflicting emotions were very believable.

It was okay

Not my favorite. Hard to stay invested. Only enjoyed the interactions between Oscar and Eli. The rest was just filler to me that I couldn’t get into. I heard good things about this and I really gave it a try. Not for me though. It was meh.

Best modern vampire story I’ve ever heard

In an era of “interpretations” of vampires, it’s really refreshing to see a return to form to the vampire stories we all heard growing up that left a mark on all of us. Highly recommended this book to anyone who loves a good fright.
