Acerca de esta escucha

This blood-chilling debut set in New Mexico’s Navajo Nation is equal parts gripping crime thriller, supernatural horror, and poignant portrayal of coming of age on the reservation

Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook.

As a lone portal back to the living for traumatized spirits, Rita is terrorized by nagging ghosts who won’t let her sleep and who sabotage her personal life. Her taboo and psychologically harrowing ability was what drove her away from the Navajo reservation, where she was raised by her grandmother. It has isolated her from friends and gotten her in trouble with the law.

And now it might be what gets her killed.

When Rita is sent to photograph the scene of a supposed suicide on a highway overpass, the furious, discombobulated ghost of the victim—who insists she was murdered—latches onto Rita, forcing her on a quest for revenge against her killers, and Rita finds herself in the crosshairs of one of Albuquerque’s most dangerous cartels. Written in sparkling, gruesome prose, Shutter is an explosive debut from one of crime fiction's most powerful new voices.

Featured Article: The top 100 horror books of all time

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.

Incredible

Anxiety-inducing in the best way!
I loved the story, the characters, and the spectacular originality of this novel.
The ending was so satisfying, but gave me the idea that there could be a series featuring our hero, Rita.
I look forward to seeing more work from this new author, as I am sure their craft will only be honed in time.

Alright listen

I found myself wandering off in thought listening to this book. It was good but a little predictable and dull.

Good story

Could have done without the americanized Native Americans are just better people narrative. Nor the Mexican boogie man. Even the native homeless person was worthy of dignity but not any Latinos, too bad, really good story overall, in spite of glaring inconsistencies and convenient plot twists. Looking forward to book two.

Enjoyable

Not everyone's cup of tea probably. Kept me listening on the edge of my seat, at least most of the time. It's blend of supernatural and police mystery with the main character's life in danger! Fun times!

An engrossing mystery with religious overtones

I'm looking forward to Ms. Emerson's future mysteries. I'm hoping for still more details of the inner life of a modern adult Navaho woman.

Terrific unique read

I recommend this to anyone who wants to read something special. Ghosts and insight into an American culture few of us are knowledgeable of.

Riveting police drama with a Navajo twist

Part “Sixth Sense,” part Tony Hillerman novel, part something unique to itself. Police photographer, Rita, has a problem. She is being haunted by a ghost insisting she wasn’t a suicide and wants Rita to prove it.
Rita’s vision are getting noticed to her detriment. Add some corrupt cops and you have “ Shutter.”

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed the different perspective of the recently dead living alongside those who might be able to see them. Also the New Mexico location was fun for me personally, having lived there for a long time.

Shutter

While the story was good it all comes down to the narrator which was awful.
