About this listen
A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook
Across the warp storms of the Great Rift, a distress beacon calls for aid. The Rock is listening, for the Dark Angels have only their oaths to remind them of who they are.
LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE
See what happens when the Dark Angels encounter a planet that might have even more secrets than they do! Can Master Lazarus cope with discovering what it really means to be defined by your oaths?
THE STORY
Supreme Grand Master Azrael summons Lazarus and his Fifth Company to honour an old debt on the Knight world of Reis – a planet upon which the warp has set its hungry gaze.
But Lazarus is not so sure Reis wants to be saved – its Knights are long lost, its governance is dogged by political strife, and internecine conflict hampers the world’s defence against an ancient evil. An evil which, like Lazarus himself, refuses to die.

Story
On the prison world of Zartak, darkness has fallen on arbitrators and inmates alike. The Night Lords have come, bringing with them the shadow of fear and pain. But these monsters are not the only ones with an interest in Zartak. From the void, running on silent, another fleet emerges. Story
Kept alive and imprisoned for 10 thousand years, Luther is the curse and the salvation of the Dark Angels made manifest. None are so close to the heart and history of the Chapter as the man that embodies all that was great about the First Legion and all that is shameful about the Dark Angels. In his story is writ the tale of the Horus Heresy and the fall from Enlightenment in a single long life. Glory, honour, pride, shame and betrayal weave a tapestry of truth and lies that the Supreme Grand Masters of the Dark Angels have sought to understand and unbind across 10 bloody millennia.

In the darkness beyond the galaxy, there are monsters. Some swim closer to the light, drawn by the beacon that is the Astronomican, while others stalk the Void, predators in the dark. The Carcharodons have hunted for millennia, but now they are drawn into a new blackness...the Dark City of the drukhari itself. Commorragh. For a thousand years, Chaplain Tangata Manu has searched for a relic lost under his watch: an ancient thing, once charged into the keeping of the Forgotten One himself. Story
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Neither cosmic philosopher Lars Soren, hotshot pilot Bianca Petrescu, nor the high priestess Jessica McHugh—Lady Death herself—can say quite where in the galaxy they are. But after an experiment gone horribly wrong, one thing is clear: Asphodel Station isn’t in orbit around Jupiter any longer. Worse, the monsters that live out here—ancient eldritch beings thought only to exist in stories and nightmares—have now been alerted to Earth’s existence.

An alien AI called the System had taken over Earth and transformed his apartment building into a 100-floor dungeon tower of traps, monsters, and loot. Trapped at the top, Lucas and the other residents have just one year to reach the ground floor and escape before the tower self-destructs. That’s his first problem. The second is he slept through the System’s welcome orientation, so a Class was picked for him. Lucas is now a Blood Reaver. A brutal Class based on speed, ferocity, and striking from the shadows.

When an ambitious teenage girl from Earth finds herself in a magical realm, she could be the hero—but she'd prefer to be the villain. Chase had it all planned out. Do a little time in one of the emperor's jails, say a four-year stretch, for getting rid of some trash that no one would miss, and when he got out, the path to leadership would be wide open. Unfortunately, his bastard of a father, the same one who left his mother to die in poverty and him to run wild on the streets, took an interest. Seeing him sitting on the bench when his case went to court was a shock. But not as big a shock as being sentenced to ten years in the Imperial Navy.

The Yapper saves the day!
I really liked this story, Lazarus genuinely feels fear and is a lot more relatable than most other dark angels. The company command is pretty well written with their own unique quirks. The first chapters of Ork Battle was kinda boring, but it quickly picks up the pace after the meeting with Azrael and the Yapper herself. Performance could use a little bit more range but the story carries this audiobook.

The story met standards but the reader has limited range
So the story is decent. The writing didn’t win me over but the broader story was good. A twist followed by a new foe for the series which won’t turn the Black Library on its head but its fresh and I respect that.
John Banks has a limited range and I don’t think he used the full of even his limited set on this book. What he brings is decent it’s worth the three stars but it really could have been better for differentiating characters.

Simple and Enjoyable
It is a good action story. The story felt it dragged in places, particularly the final battle. The combat was well written, but there was a lot of it. All the characters were likable and it was narrated well. The book was at its best with the character interactions.

The story kept me hooked, and I never felt bored or wanting to skip forward, this was really enjoyable book, that added a lot of lore for the dark angles, and the ending OMG sent me chill through my whole body, amazing ending with an amazing character with depth and struggle and moment that made a tear come to my eye,

Amazing book and definitely worth the read!
Lazarus captivates and keeps us centered on the mission while handling set back after set back. Taking on foes never encountered before while receiving aid from the least likely of places.
Definitely offers a new look at the Dark Angels and reignites my love for the 1st Legion/Chapter.

A grounded space marine story. Good story with interesting characters
The story was engaging and more grounded. It’s not like some of the other space marine story’s that seem very sterile and we went here we did xyz and everyone clapped and no civilians are ever mentioned. You really get to experience the world though story telling. Even when there is exposition it’s integrated into the characters experience. Overall I really enjoyed this story because it is relatable and has personal connection between normal people and SM’s.
