Même si la guerre est terminée, la vie tarde à reprendre son cours. Tandis que les survivants peinent à guérir leur âme écorchée, les disparus, eux, laissent des traces indélébiles et des cœurs brisés.
En Europe, la famille Nicolas trime dur pour faire renaître le verger tandis que Jacob veille à bâtir un avenir pour ses deux filles à Paris où, jadis, ils vivaient tous heureux avec Bertha. Brigitte, quant à elle, tente de surmonter la disparition de son beau Canadien auprès de Madame Foucault et de la petite Éva tandis que Gilberte, au Québec, se dévoue à aider son bon ami Ernest à surmonter la perte de son fils. L’amour triomphera-t-il réellement sur l’adversité?
