Publisher's summary

One final cry - "God almighty, help us!" - and suddenly Hannah's world shifted violently, and a blinding collision scattered her mind and shook her bones. Then came the pain, the freezing water, and a hand reached for hers before all faded into darkness.

When Hannah awakes in a warm and welcoming room she has never seen before - tended to by kind, unfamiliar faces - most of her memory has been swept away but not all. She recalls fragments of the accident. She remembers a baby. And a ring on her finger reminds her of a lie. But most of all, there is a secret. And in this house of strangers, she can trust no one but herself to keep it.

Toe tapping with boredom.

I admit I'm just under two hours into it. At least that's what the counter says... did I fall asleep? I'm still waiting for a actual story to begin.... something..... please.....
Nevermind, I'm not going to be able to get through it since I'm already too bored!

NARRATOR: It's not HER fault, she's very good!

Basically a retelling of Lady of milkweed manor

I read the reviews for this book and one of my friends also said it was horrible.

The reviews found it shocking and a disappointing departure from what Klassen usually writes.

Potential spoilers

Honestly I was ready for some biology lesson sex scene that would prompt me to shut the book off. It wasn’t that. It was in the vein of the scene in LOMM. Stormy night, lonely people, passionate kisses, and description of undressing. Meh. Deanne Gist, Francine Rivers, Julie Lessman, and Marylu Tyndall can push the envelope just as far.

Other complaints said the Christian message was watered down. I didn’t see it that way. Themes of forgiveness and redemption were touched on repeatedly.

Not my favorite Klassen book by far, but I’d say it’s actually better LOMM because the redemption idea comes full circle. Yes, there’s adultery, illegitimate children, and lies but that’s a common device Klassen uses and is common to the genre.

If the book is counter to your convictions I’m not going to criticize, but I had to add my two cents.

Different, just as wonderful!

This one may be my favorite so far. I am OBSESSED with all things Julie Klassen.

From the story to the reading, I couldn’t put this one down.

Great story with twists and turns that I didn’t expect!

MUST read.

Good Story

This story is set in a "period" situation in a gentleman's family and was well written as well as beautifully narrated (I would love to hear more stories read by this narrator). I usually can guess a turn of events but a few things took me by surprise, which is a good thing. I always appreciate that Julie Klassen's stories are not predictable "cookie cutter" plots.

Sir John deserved better.

Sir John deserved better than a wishy washy girl who could not make up her mind to choose him until the end and even then she first lusted after another man... my opinion is Hannah was a week character who didn't deserve the happy ending she deserved. She couldn't afford to let any of her options go... disgusting, even if it's a unpopular opinion.

Klassen walks a fine line

I want to start by saying I am a big fan of Julie Klassen and I think I’ve read all her novels now. This one departs from her normal style. I will say that the suspense of the story drew me in to keep listening to find out what would happen. However, at one point, I nearly returned the book because I felt like I was listening to a cheap trash romance fantasy novel, and not the normal clean, classic romantic historical fiction that Klassen typically writes. She got unnecessarily sexually graphic, especially for a Christian author. I think she wanted to be perhaps a bit edgier to emphasize the message of forgiveness, reconciliation and redemption more dramatically, a la Francine Rivers style. While I enjoyed the suspense and plot twists of the story, it failed for me on two counts. First, as I mentioned, the explicit descriptions of sexual encounters were beneath Klassen’s normal standards. Second, and this contains a bit of a spoiler, in an age of the me too movement and women gaining courage to speak out against sexual assault, this novel seems to excuse it and almost romanticize it. The emphasis in the writing seems to be the male attraction or lust for the women because of their appearance. We don’t feel chemistry between the characters based on personalities, friendship or romance. I don’t think any of the women are truly treated with respect in this novel, and it left me with a sour and unsatisfied feeling at the end, wondering what message the author is sending about the glorification of sexual assault.

Yawn. When does the story start?

I’m midway through chapter 4. I just don’t think that I can listen any longer. Ho hum.

Narrator is excellent.
