About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“This Golden Girls meets James Bond thriller is a journey you want to be part of.”—Buzzfeed

Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that’s their secret weapon.

They’ve spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they're 60 years old, four women friends can’t just retire—it’s kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for 40 years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they’ve been marked for death.

Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They’re about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.

Critic reviews

“[An] unpredictable and propulsive romp of a thriller…an inventive and distinctly feminist escapade.”—Oprah Daily

“A singular suspense story thanks to its deftly fluctuating tone, which is by turns comical, violent and unexpectedly affecting…it’s impossible not to root for these dangerous dames and their refusal to let themselves be put on the ash heap—a phrase that, in this thriller, should be taken literally.”—The Washington Post

“A sharp and witty thriller.”—PopSugar

This book got me to write a review

I enjoyed this book so much it compelled me to write my first review - and I've had Audible for a while.

The narration was perfect, and I was particularly impressed with the main author.

Between the narration and the writing, I felt like I was watching a movie. I could see the whole thing. And it was Captivating! It never lagged and it avoided the trappings of a lot of other mystery/thrillers - it's in a league of its own.

Also, the way the author wrote about the topic was impressive. Like, how much research did this woman do!? And the characters were likable and relatable (and I'm not even of 'a certain age' yet.) I only wish there were more books just like this because it was simply fantastic and I'd love to read more. I'm sure this will be made into a movie at some point, how could it not be. And when it is, you'll hear me say, "Yeah but have you read the book? It's even better."

Romp fo a Whodunit

Listener,

Huzzah! A fun, romp of a whodunit with fully fleshed-out, mature characters. The four assassins, including protagonist Billie, launch the story thinking that they are on a cruise celebrating the beginning of retirement, only to be thrown into the inverse of their 40-year careers - targets of their own assignation. Twists, caper, and red herrings abound. The wrap-up seemed a bit rushed, like the end of a Christie novel. Overall, listener, I wasn't be disappointed.

Narrators Jane Oppenheimer and Christina Delaine were an excellent selection. Their voices are near enough to keep the storyline flowing, but different enough to easily recognize the 'now' from the 'then' chapters.

Performance was great. Story needs work

As far as all the comments about the performers having too young a voice that’s 100% wrong. I’m past middle age and still have a young voice. The performance was great
The story had such great potential but was a bit all over the place. I still struggled with so many names, people, etc. not enough character development if you ask me. It had the bones to be a great book but just fell short. 2.5 stars for me.

LOVED IT!

This book was an absolute delight. It was more of a light mystery; but kept me guessing and wanting to find out what was going to happen next. I enjoyed every minute of it and look forward to more by this author and narrator.
