absolutely perfect

this is my first 5 star all the way review. I couldn't ask for more. everything about this book is perfection. from the perfection of cadence in the narrator to the twists and turns of the plot to the florid and atmospheric wordsmithing. I rarely buy books from the romance package as I can just download them again when I wish to but I will be purchasing this. if you liked wuthering heights, crimson peaks, penny dreadful or any other Victorian horror romance this book is for you. even if you arent a "romance novel fan" this book is for you. I've recommended it to so many people and will continue to do so. so glad I found it.

Slow

Really slow. There were about three hours worth of performance. The bad foreign accents were embarrassing.

This was really great

I really enjoyed this book. It was well thought out and the characters were very believable. I’m unsure why it got negative reviews as this was one of the better reads I have had in sometime. I will definitely be looking for more books from this author.

Spooky people living in Transylvania make up the cast in this gothic style story starring a Scottish woman. Love this kind of historic romance mystery!

Great Story

I enjoyed the story and loved the strength and independence of Theodora. The narrator did a beautiful job of bringing the characters to life.

A different take on the vampire romance genre

I originally listened to this book back in 2010, and enjoyed it. It was my first exposure to Deanna Raybourn, and I love Charlotte Parry as a narrator.

In this story, DR takes the Dracula story and turns it into a Gothic romance, complete with first-person narrator---a young woman in an unfamiliar setting, which just so happens to be a moldering castle in Transylvania populated by strange, suspicious characters. Here, even in the late 19th-century, the residents of the castle and the village at the base of the mountain on which the castle sits, believe in the "old ways"---the ways which say that vampires and werewolves are real.

This is such a fun book. The first-person narrator structure allows the listener to get sucked into the heroine's world and into the questions of whether or not vampires are real and, if they are, who in the castle is one. The ending is a bit fantastic, but, frankly, with the amount of suspension of disbelief the whole story requires, it isn't that far of a stretch. This is definitely one for the relisten-again shelf!

Typical girl meets totured soul and "fixes" him.

Narration was very good. But the story itself is your common girl meets tortured guy, girl "fixes" him with her love. I enjoy the Lady Julia Grey books, but am disappointed in this particular title. Lady Julia Grey stories are fun and an easy distraction from tedious housework. Big picture, it encourages women trying to fix a man, a dangerous and (often) fruitless endeavor.

Spooky, Well written, Romantic.

Interesting from the start. Great narration, an interesting twisting tale. Do you believe in monsters? Or is your fear just being used to control you? An eternal question.

Entertaining Gothic Mystery

Charming Gothic mystery with great surroundings! What self-respecting Gothic mystery would not take place in Edinburgh and move on to Transylvania, then have a handsome - if somewhat sinister - count as a possible love interest?

omgosh another Deanna Raybourn novel down and I'm never disappointed. I'm on to my next, the hard part is which one.
