About this listen

These are the words of Christopher Columbus - the record of his first voyage to America. His private journal from the trip was lost, but not before being studied and condensed by later writers like Spanish historian and Dominican friar Bartolomé de Las Casas, whose abridgement has been changed to first person perspective for this production (Columbus' actual words were often included by the friar). The result is a personal record of an enterprise which changed the whole face of history. The tale of the voyage was edited by Edward G. Bourne, PhD, in 1906 for The Northmen, Columbus and Cabot, 985-1503.

Hearing CC's actual report to the Spanish Crown runs quite contrary to the hate he gets online. While he made factual assessments of the Caribbean Natives' demeanor and the ease with which they might be subdued, he also advocated for their humane treatment and for fair trade. This was a great read.

Ignore the haters and read the man's own words

The narrator’s accent makes listening to the book very compelling and makes you more likely to get immersed into the stories.

It was well updated in modern English to understand what was going on in Columbus mind.

An extremely detailed account of Columbus’s voyage in his own words. Fascinating to get inside Columbus’s head to hear exactly what he was thinking every step of the way.

Excellent adventure, with lots of details about the voyage.

Mind that the footnotes are not being read, so one might miss a lot of info if not using a written copy aside.

The narration was great, with emotion and changes in intonation, making listening exciting. Spanish accent of the narator sounds authentic and gives character to the book. I would like to hear about the other voyages from the same narrator.

Excellent adventure!

Hearing of the events of Columbus' Caribbean exploration from his own mouth helps to shed light on the truth of what history should be saying today about this amazing man. For generations, Columbus has been revered as a hero, brave and filled with respect for all mankind, even natives that sought to attack him. Time after time Columbus did what was right even when tempted to do what might give him personal gain.
