About this listen
After experiencing the devastation of losing one of our identical twin boys, I was exposed to a world of sorrow formerly unimagined. With new eyes opened to the heartbreak of the women surrounding me, I undertook the daunting task of researching the universality of suffering, primarily by documenting the stories of 50 women concentrated in a five-mile radius. These accounts of tragedy and hope are intermingled with scriptural accounts, the words of modern-day apostles and prophets, psychological and sociological views, as well as my own experiences. This book is a tapestry of vast human experience, covering a wide array of challenges including infertility, loss, abuse, mental and physical health issues, suicide, financial stress, divorce, addiction, and more. And yet, despite the myriad of trials and accompanying grief, these women exemplify testimonies of faith, resilience, and love. As they move through the three phases of a grief to a growth mindset (victim to survivor to contributor), I document helpful tools for embracing, moving through, and learning to assist others because of our sorrows.
Emily holds a bachelor's degree in English education, was a former writer for Outlier HQ, and the Second Place Winner in Nonfiction for the 2019 Storymakers First Chapter Contest. She is the creator of Ministering Moms of Missing Multiples, a bereavement support group for LDS mothers who have lost one or more of their multiples. She also began an organization called My Motherhood Matters to encourage mothers in finding joy in their motherhood. Emily is an advocate for exploring the world and embracing diversity, and spent time living in South Central Mexico teaching English with International Language Programs, as well as volunteering in Southern India with Rising Star Outreach to help those afflicted with leprosy. She lived briefly in Paris, France while her husband finished his MBA. In 2019, she gave a filmed speech at TEDx Cedar City where she explored aspects of the lessons learned from this project. Besides writing, she loves to sing, hike, read, and spend time with her four living children and husband.

Bonds That Make Us Free is a groundbreaking book that suggests the remedy for our troubling emotions by addressing their root causes. You'll learn how, in ways we scarcely suspect, we are responsible for feelings like anger, envy, and insecurity that we have blamed on others. Even though we fear to admit this, it is good news. If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

Story
How do you let go of the pain when love turns toxic, when rejection, betrayal, abuse, or addiction have shattered your soul? Love isn’t supposed to hurt, but if you’re tired of the heartache, it’s time to leave the past behind and find emotional freedom in relationships. The truth is...letting go of the past is easier said than done. Those that mean well may have advised you to pray harder or give it to God, but these solutions are far too vague.

Whether in struggle, illness, death, or failure, the presence of pain causes us to question the presence of God. We pray and watch the sky, crossing our spiritual fingers for hardcore proof of God's nearness. And in the silence, we sense something more sinister: perceived abandonment. But what if we could collect evidence that God hasn't left us? What if we could be absolutely certain of God's presence and affection, strengthening our faith against any assault? Woven throughout Scripture sits a single, extraordinary theme: God is with us.

Many people don't like the story God is writing in their lives. The mistakes, failures, tragedies, and circumstances outside of our control linger in our minds and hold us back. How do we come to grips with the pieces of our stories that we wish weren't there? How do we silence the pain of what has been done to us and the shame of what we've allowed to be done through us? In When You Don't Like Your Story, Bible teacher Sharon Jaynes shows us how God untangles our most painful emotions with the fingers of grace, putting his redemption on display.

Story
Our emotions are complex. Some of us seem able to ignore our feelings, while others feel controlled by them. But most of us would admit that we don’t always know what to do with how we feel. The Bible teaches us that our emotions are an indispensable part of what makes us human―and play a crucial role in our relationships with God and others. Exploring how God designed emotions for our good, this book shows us how to properly engage with our emotions.

It’s not easy, but God will use it to lead you toward healing. This path is called lament. In the midst of your darkest times, you will discover that lament leads you back to a place of hope - not because lamenting does anything magical, but because God sings a louder song than suffering ever could, a song of renewal and restoration.

Story
When we live with unresolved anger or hurt, the result is nearly always bitterness, broken relationships, and unhealthy behaviors. Unforgiveness not only sabotages our interactions with those around us, it impedes our own spiritual growth and inner peace. And it can happen to anyone. In her most vulnerable writing yet, Ruth Graham reveals how a visit to Angola Prison inspired her to release the unforgiveness lurking in her own heart - toward others, herself, and even her heavenly Father and her earthly father, evangelist Billy Graham.

Finding grace in the everyday…Kara Tippetts knows the ordinary days of mothering four kids, the joy of watching her children grow . . . and the devastating reality of stage IV cancer. In The Hardest Peace, Kara doesn’t offer answers for when living is hard, but rather she asks us to join her in moving away from fear and control and toward peace and grace. Most of all, she draws us back to the God who is with us in the mundane and the suffering, and who shapes even our unmet expectations and pain into beauty.

Story
The need for change as we get older - an emotional pressure for one phase of our lives to transition into another - is a human phenomenon, neither male nor female. There simply comes a time in our lives - not fundamentally different from the way puberty separates childhood from adulthood - when it's time for one part of ourselves to die and for something new to be born.

An amazing therapy resource
As a therapist, I often look for resources to help my clients process their grief by hearing the stories of others, and learn from their wisdom. I will continue to recommend it to my clients as they move through their unique forms of grief. I love the variety of stories, the connection to gospel principles, And the hope of getting to a place where you can bless others and find purpose. Thank you to all who shared their stories, and the author for beautifully putting them together.
