Not bad!

Definitely made me cringe during this story something a book hasn't made me feel in a long time. The reader could have been a little less monotone but overall pretty good book.

Graphic!

I enjoyed this book, I’m a huge fan of psychological thrillers. It’s mostly all I read and listen to. This book is very good but I found it hard to listen to at times. Some of the scenes described are very graphic. I recommend it but it’s not for the light hearted.

It was good... until it wasn't.

It's crazy. The book was good & I was thinking exactly that until the last few minutes. I won't mess it up for anyone but wish that I hadn't heard the very end. I can't tell anyone to just stop listening just before the last little bit because I wouldn't be able to do that myself but, if I could go back & mentally delete the ending, I totally would.

What If Gary Heidnik had a son and he wrote a book

The story is straight from what Serial Rapist and Murder Gary Heidnik did to his victims. predictable but decent listen if you like serial killer books.

Disturbing Tale with Lots of Twists!

This is my second T.J. Payne audio book and I really enjoyed this one! The story is one of a handy man turned serial killer and his son. The interactions between the father and son are engaging and the story telling is on par with any other enjoyable crime/horror books I've read in the past except that there were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming during the final chapters of the book. These twists make this book stand out in my mind and definitely make it more memorable than it would have been without them.

The narrator did a very good job at conveying the emotions of the characters in the book, but I don't feel his voice did Walter (the father) justice and just wasn't as haunting or gruff as I would have liked. Overall Joe Hempel does a good job at narrating this disturbing book and leaving it engrained in my mind for some time to come.

the recorded story.

What I really like the most was the twist at the end with the last memory on the operating table. Not saying more than that because I don't want to give a spoiler.

Unique Serial Killer Thriller

When a 60-year-old handyman goes on a killing spree, no one sees it coming. When he’s caught, he only wants to tell one person why. His son who’s he had a falling out with, Isaac.

Psychological thrillers are a favorite of mine, and this book was a reminder of why that is. Though it started off slow, and at first, I found it hard to keep my attention, the suspense eventually hooked me to the point where I wanted to listen to the entire thing in one go. The present/past layout built the suspense really well.

The relationship between father and son was interesting. It was almost tender even though their reason for connecting was totally wrong. Both Issac and Walter had their own interesting character quirks. I usually find myself liking the sociopaths in serial killer stories, and this one was no different with Walter though I did like Issac too. Even though he was hard to connect to, I found that I could understand why he did the things he did.

Narrator perfectly brought the characters to life.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Gruesome

The only reason I enjoyed this book is because it’s not based on a true story. If it was, I don’t think I could stomach it. The description of the torture and killings is brutal. You never know what people are truly thinking. Made me think how I would react if I found out a family member was a serial killer. Especially at the same time as the rest of the world without time to privately process it. There will always be people out there trying to make a profit on other people’s pain and misery. This is the second book I’ve listened to from this author. He knows how to tell an engrossing story. The narrator did a fabulous job.
I was given this free audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I would not regret using a credit.

Like the Sopranos

A gripping, captivating, horrific tale of torture and what leads a “sane” person to become a serial killer. I’ve never heard such gore read from a book before. Bud a completely lackluster end, just like the last episode of the Sopranos
