Acerca de esta escucha

A suspenseful dark comedy about a struggling writer who wakes up to find his date from the night before dead—and must then decide how far he’s willing to go to spin the misadventure into his next big book.

A few years ago, David Alvarez had it all: a six-figure book deal, a loving boyfriend, and an exciting writing career. His debut novel was a resounding success, which made the publication of his second book—a total flop—all the more devastating. Now, David is single, lonely, and desperately trying to come up with the next great idea for his third manuscript, one that will redeem him in the eyes of readers, reviewers, the entire publishing world…and maybe even his ex-boyfriend.

But good ideas are hard to come by, and the mounting pressure of a near-empty bank account isn’t helping. When David connects with a sexy stranger on a dating app, he figures a wild night out in New York City may be just what he needs to find inspiration. Lucky for him, his date turns out to be handsome, confident, and wealthy, not to mention the perfect distraction from yet another evening staring at a blank screen.

After one of the best nights of his life, David wakes up hungover but giddy—only to find prince charming dead next to him in bed. Horrified, completely confused, and suddenly faced with the implausible-but-somehow-plausible idea that he may have actually killed his date, David calls the only person he can trust in a moment of crisis: his literary agent, Stacey.

Together, David and Stacey must untangle the events of the previous night, cover their tracks, and spin the entire misadventure into David’s career-defining novel—if only they can figure out what to do with the body first.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Aleman’s adult debut is both riotously funny and deeply touching. While David struggles to extricate himself from his impossible situation, his quest to combat loneliness and imposter syndrome is always hiding in the background. Readers will root for David throughout the book."—Booklist, Starred Review

"[Daniel Aleman] makes a memorable move to adult fiction with this zany black comedy. . . [T]his laugh out loud suspense tale promises good things from Aleman to come."—Publishers Weekly

"A killer premise coupled with mordant humor and a corpse that has more outfit changes in a day than I do. Aleman delivers everything you could look for in a book, and more. I'm still smiling."—Steven Rowley, New York Times bestselling author of The Celebrants

Meh

It was ok. It wasn’t really a mystery. It wasn’t a thriller. It was somewhat of a dark comedy but I wouldn’t really call it that either. I kept waiting for it to pick up but it didn’t. Overall it felt flat to me.

What a dumpster fire! (Grab some marshmallows, y’all…we’re makin’ S’Mores!)

Daniel Aleman’s I Might Be in Trouble starts with a struggling writer, a charming one-night stand, and a dead body in a fancy hotel room—and somehow manages to get even wilder from there. If I Might Be in Trouble were a person, it would show up completely hammered on your doorstep at 3 a.m., clutching a dripping garbage bag, and whisper-shouting, “Listen, I swear this isn’t what it looks like!” And after a brief evaluation of your life choices, you’d be along for the ride because this book is somehow both a total disaster (in the best possible way) and an absolute charmer.

The story follows David Alvarez, a 28-year-old writer whose career is so deep in the toilet it might be haunting the sewers of New York. (Ooooh…sequel, maybe?) When his dreamy date tragically (and mysteriously) dies in his bed, David panics and calls his literary agent-slash-part-time-chaos-gremlin Stacey, who responds not with horror but dollar signs. Together, they hatch a plan that could either revive David’s writing career or land him in jail—and the hijinks that follow are a wild, laugh-out-loud fever dream.

Aleman serves up the perfect cocktail of campy chaos and emotional depth. One moment, you’re howling at the absurdity of David and Stacey’s schemes; the next, you’re feeling a little too seen as David wrestles with rejection, heartbreak, and imposter syndrome.

And let’s talk about Stacey for a second. She’s not just a supporting character—she’s a world-wise, well-intentioned human hurricane, barreling through the book with a cocktail in one hand and a “brilliant” idea in the other. If I had to hide a body, she’d be the first person I’d call (and the person most likely to sell the movie rights).

But here’s the thing: beneath all the hijinks, this book has feelings. David’s spiraling guilt over his not-so-great decisions is painfully relatable, and his struggles with rejection, family drama, and figuring out where he fits in the world punched me right in the “ugh, same” zone. One minute, you’re giggling about the absurdity of corpse farts; the next, you’re clutching your chest because, wow, who gave Aleman permission to write about your quarter-life crisis like that?

What I loved most about I Might Be in Trouble is how it somehow stays light and funny even while tackling serious themes like loneliness, failure, and the messy parts of growing up. Aleman doesn’t shy away from the existential dread of your 20s. Still, he wraps it in so much charm and absurdity that you almost forget you’re spiraling—just like David.

This book is an absolute riot. It’s sharp, bizarrely relatable, and impossible to put down. (Trust me—I tried. Spoiler: It was 2 a.m. before I gave up…and that only happened because that’s when I finished the book.) If you’re into dark humor, ridiculous schemes, and stories that leave you laughing one minute and rethinking your life choices the next, this one’s for you.

PS I alternated between the audiobook (which was a delight—well performed, fabulously characterized, and totally engaging) and a print copy I got from my book club. Highly recommend both.

Fantastic!

This book is Sex in the City meets suspense and Weekend at Bernies! It’s a delightful romp into the possibilities and fears we face as humans who struggle, struggle to get what and where we want to be and struggle with who we are once we get there. It’s a fantastic journey that kept me going back wanting to hear more! The effortless flow of words as they tell this story made it a definite must read! Well done!
