About this listen

They came after the Diseray. Some were terrors ripped from our collective imaginations, remnants of every mythology across the world. And some were like nothing anyone had ever dreamed up, even in their worst nightmares.

Monsters.

Long ago, the barriers between our world and the Otherworld were ripped open, and it's taken centuries to bring back civilization in the wake. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous monsters fighting to break through. Others are not so lucky.

To Joyeaux Charmand, who has been a Hunter in her tight-knit mountain community since she was a child, every Cit without magic deserves her protection from dangerous Othersiders. Then she is called to Apex City, where the best Hunters are kept to protect the most important people.

Joy soon realizes that the city's powerful leaders care more about luring Cits into a false sense of security than protecting them. More and more monsters are getting through the barriers, and the close calls are becoming too frequent to ignore. Yet the Cits have no sense of how much danger they're in - to them, Joy and her corps of fellow Hunters are just action stars they watch on TV.

When an act of sabotage against Joy takes an unbearable toll, Joy uncovers a terrifying conspiracy. There is something much worse than the usual monsters infiltrating Apex. And it may be too late to stop them.

Amy narration was to robotic.

story was good and refreshing change of pace. Amy's narration was to robotic and did not breath life into the main character...

I thought that it would take me so much longer to get through, but it didn't. I am truely pleased with this book and sorry that it is over.

Awesome Start!

Normally, fantasy and Sci-Fi need a straight man like Laurel and Hardy routine. Joyeaux is that to an extent, going from small town girl to big city girl. But Lackey has written the narrative in very casual "I'm gonna tell you a story" style, so the exposition doesn't feel clunky. The concept is amazing, and it won't take you long at all to fall into the story. Joy, Knight, and Carley are all incredibly wonderful, likable characters. The story flows well and it honestly felt far shorter than it actually was.

Landon is perfect for this role. Her voice feels like it belongs to Joy. There isn't a whole lot of dialogue, so she doesn't have to voice other characters too often. Her voice is quite pleasant to listen to.

Perfect

The main character is real, down to earth, and has common sense. The story has so many interesting elements, you just have to keep listening to find out more. Ten out of five, one of the best books I have ever come across.

Engrossing

Very engrossing. The reader sounded a little bit robotic at times when doing men's voices, a little choppy but overall very enjoyable!

story of a powerful young woman

starts off weather briskly, then the world setup is very thorough, the middle area drags along a bit for those of us who are accustomed to action adventure. I enjoyed the magic aspects, but somehow I feel they could have been better integrated. definitely a talented author I enjoyed the work. listening on Audible is a tremendous advantage while I'm accomplishing various tedious tasks around the studio. not a complicated rating so never feel like I get lost when I'm somewhat distracted with my activities. look forward to more Adventures of this powerful young woman.

A mystery and a fantasy

A great story for teenagers with enough meat for adults. It does have a bit of a cliff hanger ending. Good world building.
