About this listen

A fast paced medical thriller that sets and follows Jo Hart’s life long quest to recover and rediscover her principle identity. Pasting back fractured pieces of forgotten memories Jo, an orphan of Taurus, receives a little help from her friends, a loyal and lovable group, all of whom must embark on a dark forensic journey of transformative self discovery. Through song, dream and diary, Jo is met in secret disclosures whose images paint a horrific picture, a past life of sexual and physical abuse at the hands of Pablo her father, a psychopathic family killer in the House of Giral. All one can do is watch and wait as this charged group is propelled towards a new found justice of recognizance and consilience, a transformative destiny and karmic judgement of genomic sorts, passed forward at birth.

Immersive medical thriller

House of Giral is a dark, atmospheric, thought-provoking, and gripping medical thriller, exquisitely written by retired medical practitioner turned talented author, Mark Laurence Latowsky. As a former student of psychology myself, I am relentlessly drawn to stories that delve into the human psyche, and I found the plot, scenes, and character development in this book to be truly fascinating.

The story follows Jennifer <<Jo>> Hart as her life is turned upside down immediately after she hears a jazz song that forces her mind to recall traumatic memories that surpass time and death itself. Mark Laurence Latowsky has beautifully woven a web of intrigue and mystery in which he has placed all his deeply flawed characters. Now, all that’s left is for them to find their way out. The question is: can they make it, and at what price? What follows is a fast-paced medical thriller that will keep the listener captivated and entertained.

If you follow my reviews, you know that I absolutely hate any kind of spoilers, so this is as far as I’ll go in revealing the plot for House of Giral.

The audiobook version of House of Giral is skillfully performed by the secretive voice artist Carmen Christie, and although I’m convinced this is a pseudonym, I can say that I enjoyed her narration immensely. Carmen Christie reads everything in a clear and more than pleasant voice, acts all the parts properly, and infuses the story with emotion and intensity at all the right moments.

She uses subtle changes in her narration to give different voices and accents to all the main characters, which raises the level of immersion for the listener. My fine-tuned ears picked up some edits here and there, but nothing that detracts from the enjoyable experience.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an atmospheric psychological thriller that will keep you engaged and interested in its plot, characters, and ideas, I highly recommend that you check out House of Giral!
