Loved it

Enjoyable on many levels. Especially taken with the lingo of the time & the authors scene description. Very visual.

Humor

It’s fast paced, easy to listen to and funny but also serious and emotionally engaging.

ambiance

I love the era and the tough guy detective with a heart. the addition of magic makes it perfect

Hard-boiled urban fantasy

This was surprisingly good. There’s a lot of clichés, but the main plot is interesting and different. The “graphic” might be a touch too graphic in some spots, but it certainly heightens the intensity of the story. Looking forward to number two!

First Series with a Fae that I Liked.

A classy detective story with a magical twist. The world-building was as interesting as it was low-key, the intrigue was well delivered, and the ending was solid. I could listen to this audiobook more than once. Narrators did an amazing job.

I have been looking for this for years.

The fae, the proper terms and signs of folklore, a gritty detective that doesn't become part of a romance novel. Literally what I've been asking from anyone for years, thank you.

Too much music

The narrator is great and the story seems very interesting but I couldn’t finish it. I cannot get past the constant and incessant piano type jazz music that plays the entire time in the background every time the narrator is talking there is jazzy type piano music playing it’s not needed. It doesn’t set a scene it’s very distracting when you’re trying to listen and create the story in your mind while the narrator is talking.

Just OK

It was meh. Not the greatest story, plus very corny. No offense to the author, but it was not my cup of tea.

Worst narrator possible

I liked the concept and writing of this story but the main character / narrator was a terrible fit. It’s not that he has a bad voice, he is just not cut out for a crime noir/ paranormal detective novel set in the prohibition era. His voice and inflection is so off it’s distracting. It’s almost as bad as listening to Ned Flanders try to rap.

Fairy noir?

If you take 1930s style Chicago mob stories, with Gats and fedoras and Italian muscle saying “youz guys,” add magic and a Fae detective cut from the same cloth as Sam Spade, and then set the story to old school radio sound effects, then this is the result.

Given that it’s book 1, I didn’t fault it too much for focusing entirely on MC Mick Oberon.
The constant music playing in the background was at times a bit too much, but the graphic audio format worked pretty well. It wasn’t half bad, although I could have done without the bursts of F bombs.
