About this listen

Anne Wakefield travels halfway around the world for love. But when she arrives in Canada from England at the end of World War II, she discovers the handsome Canadian pilot she'd fallen in love with has married someone else. Heartbroken, she prepares to return to London, though she has nothing left there to return to. Her former fiance's mother makes a suggestion: marriage to her other son.

Badly wounded and scarred during the war, Erik Gustafson thinks he's a poor substitute for his brother. Although he loves Anne almost from the first time he sees her, he cannot believe she would ever be able to love him as he is - especially as he might be after another operation on his bad leg.

Anne sees the beauty of his heart. The cold prairie winter may test her courage, but can she prove to Erik that her love for him is real?

lovely story

This was a sweet, heartwarming tale about a couple who were not initially supposed to be together but learn to open their hearts during their struggles to overcome life's difficulties and find love in the process.

I was given the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for leaving a review, but this did not affect my rating.

I listened to this at 1.9x speed

Great Short Story

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. I loved this story. All of the characters together made it a great listen. It is short with several twists and turns but they all weave the story into a great one. Loved the mother. The narrator made me sit up and take notice because several times I thought it was a man talking when it was actually one of the women.

Home Fires

I really enjoyed this short audiobook. It was well written and entertaining, not mushy like regular romance novels. Steve Wojtas was a fine narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

This is not a sweet romance

I would like to say that this is not a sweet romance since there is two sex scenes. It is not graphic but the author does describe what is happening.

I would categories this as seductive. Sweet means no sex like Jane Austen books, and this is definately not it.

I liked the story to begin with but as it progressed I found that I did not believe in the character. I felt she was too forgiving after what he did. If it was only her I might have understood but when others also forgave the guy after what he did to her and someone else I sort of lost interest. I could not understand for the life of me why she did not tell her love interest what happened before she met him. It's not like they were engaged.
This book is not for me but others might like it.

Love Story...........Maybe???

Home Fires
: Jana Richards

This short listen can be classified as historical romance set mostly post WWII. Young English woman leaves home to meet her Canadian fiancee at his home. Surprises abound when she arrives and the roller coaster ride begins. An almost sweet listen.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Steve Wojtas.

My Thoughts on Home Fires

This book was kind of a hidden gem.

Both the author and narrator were new to me, but I'm so happy to have come across this book and have gotten the chance to listen to it. It's one of those stories in which I read the description before seeing anything else about the book. The blurb definitely peaked my interest. Then I saw the cover, and if I'm completely honest, I'm glad I got the blurb alone first. I think I might have passed it up in normal skimming through for new books and that would have been a mistake. The cover just wasn't one that would catch my eye and have me taking a deeper look but the book was everything the blurb hinted at and more. The writing was really good. The story might have been short but it had good character development with a strong leading lady who I really liked and a troubled leading man who under the gruff exterior was a good guy even if there were those moments that you wanted to shake him. This story had a steady and easy pace that kept me interested, and a great ending. It had all those important things I look for in a romance. And to add to it, the narrator had one of those voices that was so smooth but entertaining and everything that makes me want to remember his name and go look for other books by him so I can listen to that voice again and again.

Overall this was a good story and listen. It was a good pairing of author Jana Richards and narrator Steve Wojtas. I would recommend historical romance fans (or just fans of a nice, short but satisfying read) give this one a try.
