About this listen

If you want to discover the captivating history of Virginia, then keep reading...

From being the home of some of the first people in America to being the birthplace of the United States, Virginia has had an incredibly rich and interesting history even before its inauguration as a state. Virginia was once the most populous and affluent state in the country and the birthplace of many of the most important figures in early United States’ history. Yet, despite Virginia’s successes and great heritage, it has, for much of history, been a divided state that has found itself debating even the most basic rights and issues. This, of course, is no more obvious than the splitting of Virginia into Virginia and West Virginia in the years following the American Civil War.

In this audiobook, you will discover:

  • Virginia’s first people and their complex cultural, social, economic, spiritual, and political systems and traditions
  • The colonization of America and the United States’ first settlement in Jamestown, Virginia
  • Interactions between the state’s first settlement and first people
  • Virginia’s culture under colonial rule
  • Virginia’s journey towards developing its own culture, economy, and political system, separate from that of England, mostly surrounding the culture of tobacco farming
  • The state’s involvement in the American Revolution and the years post war
  • Virginia’s involvement in the American Civil War and the effects of the war on the state
  • The state’s many social movements
  • Virginia’s involvement in the First and Second World Wars and the effects of the war on the state and country
  • Virginia’s development in the 20th century into the military hub of America

Clear & Concise

Captivating History is an apt title for this book. The author captures the overall facts and societal biases in each of the cases presented. He explains how many historic events that occurred in Virginia were strategic in nature and few occurrences were happenstance. I enjoyed this book and will seek other works by the author.

the history of a nation

while most American children go through some of Virginia's history, due to Jamestown being so vital to the creation of the United States, this goes much deeper in ways even I never realized. through nearly every historical aspect of the country, Virginia has often been at the forefront.

my only critique is the glaring error when it's mentioned that Lincoln is elected as the 19th president -- whereas he was the 16th. tsk tsk, captivating history

Informative and entertaining overview

As a native of the Commonwealth, I enjoyed listening to this brief but interesting discussion of Virginia's history. Despite the paucity of information, the author does a good job of honoring Native America history. The book also offers a balanced treatment of slavery as a primary issue behind the Civil War. Well-done!

Lack of detailed descriptive support.

While accurately portraying the events described, the work lacked supporting details and did not describe many aspects of life in each of the periods covered. I would describe the work as more of a summary of the history.
