About this listen

Who were the Teutonic Knights?

The Teutonic Knights were established to help the sick and injured in the Holy Land in a similar vein to the Knights Hospitaller. Once they were battle-tested in war, however, they were commissioned to be full-fledged fearsome warriors, fighting for the cause of Christendom. Those causes would have the Teutonic Knights leave the Holy Land altogether when they were redeployed to Eastern Europe.

Soon the knights were attempting to subdue pagans, extending their presence throughout the Baltics by way of a string of fortresses. Their fate would rise and fall with the political and ideological situations that were prevalent on the European continent. The rise of both Poland and Lithuania would come to threaten the Teutonic Order, and the climactic Battle of Tannenberg in 1410 would have repercussions that would reverberate for centuries to come.

This audiobook follows the meteoric rise, climactic fall, and many years of rebirth undergone by the Teutonic Knights. From Jerusalem to the modern-day charitable organizations headed by the order, this audiobook covers the complete history of the Teutonic Knights in full.

Here in this audiobook, you will discover:

  • How the Teutonic Order was formed
  • Their mission in the Holy Land
  • Their crusades in the Balkans and the Baltics
  • How the Protestant Reformation affected the order
  • And a whole lot more!

Very detailed and well done audiobook!

The Teutonic Knights were the Germanic version of The Knights Templar and The Knights Hospitaller. They were both Crusaders and the military arm of Roman Catholic Christianity around the Middle Ages in mostly eastern Europe and the Baltics.
They fought in the middle east against the armies of Islam and against the pagans in early Prussia and later in the Baltic States. Their ultimate goal was to establish Christianity in pagan parts of eastern Europe.
As usual this "Captivating History" audiobooks sheds light on a somewhat lesser known Knighthood of early Christiandom.

teutonic knights

this is probably one of the best of the captivating history books. I really enjoyed this. It was wonderful learning about the teutonic order and the mission in the holy land.

hard to digest

this may have been a shorter book, but it seemed to drag on much longer. I guess I just didn't know enough about them, to begin with, so it ended up being challenging to find interesting overall.

and Jay Herbert was much better than his previous performances that I've listened to. still needs a little bit of work in some pronunciations, but I didn't find him annoying at all, this time around

Great history, though some odd pronunciations

Overall this is an excellent book. The timing of the chapters and movement of the stories is well done. The biggest issue I had with it was the random pronunciations of what I would consider common words such as Byzantine.

The book provided good information and is well worth the listen though.

Great history but oddly read.

The narrator made this sound like a 2 1/2 hour commercial on a local radio station. Other than that it was a great history lesson.

Great story about this order of knights

I'm much more familiar with the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitallers so learning more about the Teutonic Knights was very interesting. I hadn't known their origins were lending aid or hospital type during the crusades before becoming a fighting force and order of knights.

I must say I'm not a fan of Jay Herbert's narration style. He has this "always surprised" tone that doesn't really fit these types of historical stories in my opinion. Aside from a small editing issue, the performance is solid - just not to my taste.

NOT Captivating

What we have here is a failure to engage the listener by the reader. The rhythm and tone do not match up with the material I tried because I paid for it and there's no return available, but I cannot listen to this.
