About this listen

She has a passion for unlocking the secrets of the past....

Archaeologist Carter Wessex is drawn to Farrell Mountain to solve a centuries-old mystery — and to find a fortune in hidden gold. One thing stands in her way: Nick Farrell, a notorious corporate raider with way too much sex appeal and no patience for trespassers on his land. After an explosive introduction, Carter abandons the project... but with Nick in hot pursuit.

What she finds is something more valuable than gold. Though wary of Nick’s change of heart, Carter is soon swept up into the mystery — and the arms of a man she swore she’d never fall for. As buried secrets surface and passion grows, the shocking details of the missing gold are revealed. So are Nick’s true motives, leaving Carter to wonder if everything between them has been just another cunning ruse... and if Nick has more secrets yet to share.

It will take a heart of gold to find the truth — and have faith in a timeless love.

Great book

i really enjoyed this book. Nick and Carter are so hard hearted because of the past. i really didn't think they would get together much least stay together. But i was so glad both of them finally gave into each other and fall and fall hard. i even liked the way it ended!

Easygoing light listen

Yes this is predictable, as are most romance novels, and no it's not on a par with the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but it's a light easy going contemporary listen that won't have you on the edge of your seat nor will it eat up many of your brain cells either. It was JRW's 2nd published book and she has grown in ability since then.

Worth a credit? Well it's only $7.35 for 11 hours worth of listening, so I suggest just buying it and saving your credit for a more expensive book (i.e. the next BDB book Lover At Last which is out in March 13) you can tell I'm a Brotherhood junkie can't you.

I Was Alright

I almost stopped listening when the one character went off into a chapter long review about people from 1800. I know the character is an archeologist, back a full cheaper. Not necessary.
I forwarded past that and finally got to a party of more interest.

Heart of Gold

This was pretty good, definitely early in J. R. Ward's career. Carter Wessex wants to dig on Nick Farrell's mountain looking for early American artifacts. It was quite a fight between them and fighting the attraction was something else. Definitely enjoyed this one.

Not a typical JR Ward book-Terrible naration.

What did you like best about Heart of Gold? What did you like least?

This is your typical romance. You can predict the book within the first 15 minutes. 2 people begin as adversaries and fall in love. Easy listening. Simple plot. I have read/or listened to every JR Ward/Jessica Bird book she has written. I love them all!! This one, I would not recommend. You can feel this is her first book written. Characters are superficial.. Narrator is terrible. The main character Nick sounds like an old man. You do not get the feel he is only 36 years old. The narration does not support the simple love story. I would not listen to this narrator again.

Would you be willing to try another book from J. R. Ward? Why or why not?

I love all JR Ward books and have read them all.

How could the performance have been better?

More inflection into the characters, slow down the narration, and keep the voice with the age of the character.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

Better narrator!

Nice and easy

There is a detailed foreword from JR Ward on how this book was actually her second book first released in 2003. She very clearly states that there are things wrong in the book but it taught her a lot about how to write...I agree there are some things wrong and her writing did improve!

This book had some great characters, and chemistry, and overall it was a suspenseful but easy listen. Although the main female character hasn't spoken with her father in 2 years I think a person would enjoy the book more if you go in thinking it was 10 years. There is an overall disjointness that comes about when you think the then 26 year old didn't understand what was happening in her own home, much easier to think it was an 18 year old that didn't get it....so with that slight change in my own mind the book became more "believable".

I have to say that I was a bit annoyed with the big reveal, once again this is a story that had a barely based in reality drama that seemed to be there just to continue the story and that always irks me...but the rest of it was really good. Nice tension, witty banter, would have preferred the hot scenes to be a bit more in detail but overall this is a good book.

I would wait for a sale, but considering the length and the good story it would be worth a credit in my opinion too!

Yaaaaawn.

Honestly, I just couldn't get into this book. I started it and got about 1 1/2 hours into it and just had to quit. The leading man was SUCH a jerk, I just couldn't bear to let her fall in love with him. The author made the woman out to be a frumpy loser, and the man to be an uptight jerk. It just had no appeal to me.

Couldn't Finish

I only got through the 6th chapter and couldn't stand it any more. This narrator sounds 12 years old. Not just her voice, but the totally adolescent melodramatic presentation including over-emphasizing at least one word in each sentence. I usually get used to less than stellar narrators after a few chapters, but it just didn't happen.

The book might be ok when read (though the writing is not up to her later, BDB. levels), but avoid this version.

Not her best.

This thing reads like a 1970's romance novel. The "hero" is an insensitive jerk who accuses the heroine of being interested in a minor and of having an affair with a married man. He has had a string of involvements with women he has used and casually discards a girlfriend. He's secretly using the heroine to win brownie points with her father, a potential business partner. The heroine lies about an assault / fails to report to the authorities. Most of the characters aren't very likeable. Bad pacing. No complaints about the narrator, who does a good job with the voices, but I can't bring myself to finish this.
