About this listen

In this groundbreaking book, Eduardo Duran - a psychologist working in Indian country - draws on his own clinical experience to provide guidance to counselors working with Native Peoples and other vulnerable populations.

This second edition includes an important new chapter devoted to working with veterans, examining what it means to go to war and what is required for veterans to heal. Duran also updates his thinking on research, including suggestions on how to invent a new liberation research methodology through applied story science. Translating theory into day-to-day practice, the text presents case materials that illustrate effective intervention strategies for prevalent problems, including substance abuse, intergenerational trauma, and internalized oppression. This unique resource explores theoretical Indigenous understanding of cosmology and how understanding natural law can lead us to new ways of understanding and healing the psyche.

Excellent and life changing

This book was a required reading for my Master’s in social work. My electives are centered on social work as it pertains to Native American communities. As a member of a Native American community and as someone who lives in Indian Country as we call it this book is helpful and needed. Like most Native people I was indoctrinated with a narrow form of Christianity. As I have come into myself and connected further with my culture I have frequent spiritual breakthroughs. This book is one of those breakthroughs. My grandparents both suffered tremendously because of racism and I’ve been able to connect with that part of my history. I also consider my future, my husband and I are both Indigenous and we consider the spiritual and emotional environment we want for our children frequently. This book has also helped me reflect on that. Lastly this book has connected me with my present self my present situation as an advocate and Native woman myself. This book is validating of my soul and my world view. So often we are forced to code switch or water our Nativeness down to make others more comfortable. This books isn’t about that. It’s about embracing those parts of who we are and loving and connecting with others who are on a different journey.
